Chapter 10

Mind over Heart

Dream 3

I was laughing hysterically.

But it wasn't me, it was Ethista. She was wearing a light  pink dress, nearly transparent over her pale skin.

Shattered glass and ice, the size of a speck of dust each, was remains of the ice sculptures and glass statues that she continuously smashed to the ground soaking her wet.

She was mad, or just too sane.

I didn't need her to speak to know what's going on in her mind - I already knew. My heart was craving to do what she was doing in this dream. It was the day before Announcement Day.

My legs collapsed beneath me as I fell into a sitting position - cross legged. I wasn't devastated for the reason she was, I was sickened from the life's lack of perfection. The shattering of glass and ice was pleasant but unsatisfactory.

I didn't want to think about what Sienna told me, I didn't want to face what I gave up - I wanted to live with it.

Better live with the imperfections you know than fall into a new unfamiliar labyrinth. Not to mention there would be no other mazes to get lost in anyway.

A gust of air blew my hair as Ethista fell beside me into the exact same position, a reminder that we are one.

"I'd rather wear the puffy golden dress tonight," I  said wearing a huge fake smile to Tabiline.

"But you wore that a few weeks ago, on the Announcement Day, Princess"

"Then what do you suggest?"

"I suggest the black one. It's still simple with the same puff, and sleeveless"

I went through the daily procedure where all the servants of the castle tried turning me to as far as beautiful can get then left the room to join Prince Drake.

"Good morning, Princess Ethista, you look... Startling," he said looking into my eyes with his glittery eye shine. He was still the same Drake, struggling to find the right words and always getting them precisely right.

"Good morning, Prince Drake, that's a very sweet compliment"

The servants left the room leaving us alone for a while before the meeting starts.

"So.. How are you?" He asked casually

His expression altered the moment the servants left; his blue eyes became warmer and his words easy coming.

"I am alright, what about you?" I said with nervously shifting eyes. Selena didn't mention anything related to me and Prince Drake, in fact what she said proves that there should be nothing connecting us - unlike what his friendly treatment suggests.

"Is something wrong Ethista? You don't sound... Yourself," he said, his hand resting on my shoulder

I stood silently as he rummaged every corner of the room with his eyes, searching for someone who might be overhearing. When all that he saw was lifeless furniture and huge walls he gave a heavy sigh and added, "Well, let us go before we're too late. We don't want our guests waiting"

We entered the room side by side, taking every step slowly and patiently with our heads held high in confidence as trained. Men and women stood in greeting as we approached the stand.
