I absentmindedly decorated the tree. I had finished selling my papes earlier and I knew the boys would love the tree.
I nimbly threaded the popcorn on the string. My mind began to wander.
FLASHBACK
The streets of Brooklyn were getting dark and I was trying sell my last pape. Brooklyn was dangerous at night but I wasn't scared.
"Spot Conlon is just a big teddy bear," I laughed at the thought, remembering how he melts at the sight of a bunny.
I sighed, realizing that I wasn't going to sell my papers.
I picked up my pace slightly when I heard footsteps following me. My foot caught and I went flying towards the gravel.
Ready for a fight, I flipped over to see my attacker.
Spot put his cane to my throat, "I don't know who you think you are selling papes in my territory but-" realization hit Spot, "Doll face?!" He lowered his cane.
"What?!" I spat, annoyed.
He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, "Um so why are you in Brooklyn?"
Still annoyed I answered, "Maybe I came to visit you, obviously that was a bad idea," The last part was barley audible but he still heard it.
"Well it's freezing out here, we should get you inside," he grabbed my hands, "F-faith you're bleeding!"
Ignoring the tingly feeling coming from his touch, I tore my hands away and wiped them on my pants.
"Yeah well I need to get back home," I turned away and walked.
"Faith, I get that you're mad but please,"
I continued walking.
"Faith,"
"Faith!"
"FAITH!"
"FAITH GET BACK HERE YOU DO NOT JUST WALK AWAY FROM THE KING OF BROOKLYN!!"
He caught up to me and slammed me into a wall.
"You have an awful temper, you know that?" I teased trying to not let my fear evident.
I looked into his icy eyes and didn't see the murderous eyes I expected but saw nothing but sweet passion.
"You are so damn annoying," he whispered. My breathing quickened and our breaths mingled.
"But so damn cute," our lips collided with no time to spare.
By the time we separated, cause of lack of air, my hat was somewhere on the ground, spots hair stuck up everywhere, my cheeks were flushed, and Spot's suspenders were not on his shoulders.
I skipped home, warm, with a smile on my face.
END OF FLASH BACK
I began to make ornaments out of newspapers.
"What if?" I began to internally worry, " What if I was just one of his flings? What if? What if? What if? What i-" I looked down to see Les and Tumbler pulling at my sleeve, asking if they could make ornaments. Over time I had all of the boys decorating the boarding house.
When everything was, as Les put it, perfectly festive, and Christmas dinner was cooking, we all gathered around Jack, to hear the Night Before Christmas.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"FAITH! WAKE UP! SANTA CAME!!!" Mush, Les, and Tumbler were jumping on my bed. I smiled as the boys all scattered and bolted to the tree, in hopes of finding a package with their name on it.
The presents were wrapped in shiny red wrapping that stood out in the room.
Still in my pajamas, I sat down on the rug next Race, who was amazed by the beauty of the wrapping paper.
Jack and Mush, who could hardly wait, handed out the presents.
Jack and I saved money to make sure everyone got at least one present but thanks to determination, all the boys got more than one.
I watched as the boys as they uncharacteristically opened their presents, carefully. After the first present most got annoyed and tore everything open.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was reading my new book when someone plopped down next to me.
I didn't bother to look up until I heard, "Hiya Doll face,"
My head snapped up, my eyes widened, and slammed my book shut.
A nervous smile appeared on my face, "H-hi Spot,"
"Whatcha readin'?" He picked up my book and looked at the cover, "Romeo and Juliet? What's that?"
Ease spread throughout my body as we made conversation. After explaining William Shakespeare and his tragedies, I suddenly realized and squeaked (quite true to my name), "SPOT! I have a present for you!" I clapped my hands together, hopped up from the couch and ran to the tree. I ran through the crowded boarding room and heard the calls of "Hey Squeak!" Or "Faith!"
I ran back with his presents and dropped them in his lap. He looked amazed.
"I-I don't have anything for you!" He's stuttered, quite out of character.
"It's fine! Open it!" I prodded.
His eyes softened and a smile, not his classic smirk, a smile appeared on his face as he pulled out the blue flannel and red suspenders.
"I- uh- you," spot stuttered, trying to find words. Suddenly his lips were on mine and we were kissing.
Spot broke us apart and took off his key necklace. I gasped slightly.
"Will you be my goil?"
Not trusting my words, I nodded my head rapidly.
He put the necklace on me and I flung myself onto him once again.
Spot pushed me down into the couch with him hovering over me.
"Hey Faith will you- MY EYES! NO! WHY?! OUR BABY SISTER! DEFLOWERED!" Mush cried at the sight of me kissing Spot.
Spot and I jumped apart and sat, wide eyed, on opposite ends of the couch.
Race hurried in, "What is it?!"
Mush, "Spot was shoving his tongue down our baby sisters throat!"
I watched Spot try to ease his temper because he knew that getting angry would not help his case.
"He did WHAT?!"
Blink, Skittery, and Jack skirted in, "What happened?!" They said simultaneously.
Race and Mush were out raged, "Spot was sucking our baby sisters face off!"
"No!"
"He doesn't deserve her!"
"The king of BROOKLYN?!"
Eventually all of the newsies were present and outraged.
"STOP!" I screamed silencing them all, "I was the one who kissed HIM!"
There was a deafening silence.
Race spoke up, "R-really?"
"Yes and I'm going to be his girl so you need to cry a river, build a bridge, and GET OVER IT!"
They all looked rather sheepish.
Race spoke up once again, "um we're really sorry,"
They slowly filed out of the room. I stopped Les before he could leave.
Seeing the sad look on his face I pecked his cheek, "Hey, remember, you're still my number one,"
A smile spread on his face and he stuck his tongue out at Spot.
Spot chuckled as Les left the room, "I better watch out or that one is gonna steal you!"
I laughed slightly, "I'm sorry about all of.... THAT,"
"It's fine, I guess I'll have to get used to it!"
A smile spread on my face, I leaned in for a kiss- "LEAVE ROOM FOR JESUS!" Mush pushed us apart, "I mean it IS Christmas!" Mush ran away with a satisfied smirk on his face.
I laughed and dragged Spot to join in the fun.
