The Big Five
Chapter 7
I awoke earlier than the rest of the group. I sat up and looked around. Birds flew by overhead. The world was dead, but animals had survived. The sun sparkled just over the hill and the blue sky stretched many miles. A gentle cool breeze came and passed every once and awhile. I yawned and stood up to stretch my sore arms and legs. I felt the machete at my side. It reminded me that the world was normal anymore. More monsters are spreading in different places, taking over cities, destroying life. It was one big mess. Conner sat up, but he didn't look tired.
"Get any sleep?" I asked.
"Uhhh.... yeah." Conner said.
I furrowed my brow. "Uhhh.... Yeah?" I mimicked.
"Yesssssss!" Conner hissed.
"All right." I said trying not to argue with him. I couldn't help but think Conner was hiding something or planning to kill us again. A shame because I had trusted him. Mason awoke groaning.
"My legs." Jeremy groaned back. "My chest."
"Shut up!" Emma yelled.
"Ugh." The brothers grunted. Brook woke up and stretched out.
"Ready to go?" Brook asked.
"Noooooo." The brothers whined.
"Don't make me drag you by the ears up the hill!" Emma said short tempered.
We started packing our things together, fitting anything we could in pockets. We started up the hill with Mason and Jeremy sleepily stumbling behind us.
"I don't want to be a hero anymore!" Mason whined.
"I just want my house back with my nice bed." Jeremy said in between yawns.
"Too bad, we all have things to deal with and we all have to pull our own weight." Emma said. The hill we were climbing up wasn't green as you'd expect the hill to look like, it was completely black and burnt up. Every step you took you could hear a crunching noise coming from the ground. Everyone one of us had cuts on our hands and arms but we toughed it out, we had to or else the big things would really get us if we couldn't survive the small things. Everyone was silent, trying to concentrate on getting to the top of the mountain. Once we reached the top
Emma gasped. "A town!" She shouted.
"Finally, somewhere else we can sleep besides the burnt ground." Mason said.
"We don't know if there are people or monsters in there. And besides, if there are people they might not be friendly. This is the end of the world after all." I said.
Brook nodded in agreement. "We better be..." But before she could finish something hit us in the back of the head, sending us soaring down the hill towards the town. Conner dodged the attack and grabbed Mason by his grey hoodie.
Brook, Jeremy, and Emma stopped themselves after tumbling down the hill for a little bit, but I couldn't stop. I kept scraping my arms and legs until I hit the bottom hard. My left arm and my legs were limp and the pain burned in them.
Brook got up and ran to me, blood dripping from her arms.
"J? Are you OK?" She asked.
"M-My legs are broken." I managed to squeak. I stayed laying, with no feeling in my legs or arm. I got a better look at what creature was flying in the sky. A huge scaly black creature was flying in the sky. It's eight wings flapped around as it flew towards Conner.
