The Big Five
Chapter 4
Brook held onto my waist really hard, it hurt. Conner screamed wildly. I held onto the bike, my knuckles aching from holding on really hard. We soared over to the ramp I built.
"Here we go!" I said in-between breaths of air from how fast we were going. The bike hit the ramp and we soared into the air. Brook screamed. My eyes were wide. Conner still hollered wildly. We flew over the ocean.
"Just a little more!" Conner shouted. The bike started descending.
"We aren't going to make it!" Brook yelled.
Conner looked back. "We aren't!" I thought quickly, in a much panicked state.
"Brook, can you jump us the rest of the way right before we hit the water?" I asked. She took a second to think.
"Maybe, let me get in the middle." Brook and I switched spots.
"You better hurry!" Conner yelled. We waited for the bike to get closer to the water.
"NOW!" Brook stood up, a hand around me and Conner. She jumped just before the bike hit the water. We flew over to the island. She landed on her feet and set us down. My heart calmed down from all the intensity.
I started to look around. The place looked like a giant had taken a flamethrower and scorched the whole place. Buildings were destroyed, the ground was ash black. The plant life was all burned to the crisp. This is Earth? I thought to myself. "What happened here?" Brook asked. I shrugged. The place looked like a complete wasteland. We saw a home shaped stack of rubble piled up nicely ahead.
"Let's go." I said. We ran to the pile. We looked inside. There were two boys lying in there.
"The brothers!" Brook said.
"Mason! Jeremy! WAKE UP!" Conner yelled. The two boys slowly opened their eyes.
"W-who are you guys?" Jeremy asked. Mason reached for something in the corner of the rubble.
"We aren't here to hurt you." I said. Mason stopped. He reached his hand over to us and pointed.
"You two, you're in The Big Five!" He said excitedly. We nodded.
"My friend Emma was too, but she died..." I said sadly. They lowered their heads understanding my grief.
"Let's get out of here." Conner said. We agreed. The three of us walked out and waited for the brothers. They came out.
Mason was taller than Jeremy and he wielded a grappling hook. He had short brown hair and blue eyes. His blue sweater matched his eyes and his brown shorts matched his hair. Jeremy, who looked younger held two throwing stars in each hand. His shaggy long blonde hair got in the way of his unusual green eyes. He wore a dark with dark jeans.
"We're ready." They said. We stood there for a while.
"What ARE we supposed to do?" Brook asked. I opened my mouth to speak but a bright flash of light startled me.
A hologram of a man appeared. He had blonde hair and brown eyes. He wore dark black and purple armor. He wielded a massive scythe.
"I'm glad you asked Brook." The hologram said. We all took a step back.
"Who are you?" Mason asked.
The hologram laughed. "I'm Julian, the creator of your power chips." We all gasped.
"You aren't anybody we saw at the lab!" Jeremy said.
Julian's expression turned to frustration. "Those two dimwits weren't supposed to be there, I was. There was a small problem with my power that I was unable to control. The only thing I was able to control was them."
He turned to Brook. "Thank you Brooklynn for killing them. Those monsters can be particularly tough in their real forms."
She nodded. "Anytime."
"How did you make our chips?" I asked.
Julian frowned. "Well the process was quite hard. I had to use most of my power to create them to help fight against the monsters. Usually I could take all of this myself, but my power grows weak with a disease. Sadly, there is no cure to this disease. The more I use my power, the quicker I will die." We all bowed our heads.
He looked around confused. "Where's Emma?" He asked.
I gritted my teeth. "She died." I said painfully.
Julian looked shocked. "Emma died? Impossible."
"She was tossed off the island by a Mourntalon." I explained.
He nodded. "I see. The following journey may be tough without her, but I see you've picked up another recruit. He said turning to Conner. Conner stepped back. "Your dad has been worried sick about you." Julian said.
Conner blushed. "You think so?"
Julian's hologram nodded. "He's been sending masses of monsters to look for you. But he shouldn't, you're a traitor to your father, Dominic." The word struck my mind like a bell. I remembered the devil talking about Dominic.
"Who's Dominic?" I asked. Julian turned to me.
"Dominic is Conner's father. He is also the one forging and controlling the monsters. Right now he is slowly taking over the world, but he is far from it. His power grows stronger every day. I knew there was no hope for me to stop him, so I made your power chips. This brings us back to what Brook asked. Your objective is to defeat Dominic and save the world from monsters."
The words struck like a knife. Save the world? Normal kids like us to save the world? We all said nothing, in taking the madness. A gentle breeze passed by.
Julian nodded. "It's hard to take in what you five must do. I will try my best to assist you along the way, but it takes much effort of power to transmit a hologram like this. I cannot convey this message any longer. Good luck heroes!" Julian said. The hologram disappeared. I finally got answers to my questions, and now we were going in blind to try to stop the most powerful being in the world.
"Conner how come you never told us your dad was the all-powerful evil dude?" Brook asked.
"My dad means nothing to me." Conner said coldly. It was getting dark.
"Well we better get some sleep to be ready for tomorrow." I said. The other four nodded. We all laid down and went to bed.
