The Big Five

Chapter 8

The black hole swirled in the sky, slowly sucking in clouds. Lightning struck around Dominic's castle, and the lightning swirled in the black hole.

"How come you never told us your dad owned a doom castle." Mason asked Conner. Conner put a hand to Mason's mouth, but it was too late. Agatha turned to look at Conner. She had fear in her eyes.

"Conner, son of Dominic. What is a monster like you doing with The Big Five?"

"I've changed my ways, I'm nothing like my dad." Conner said.

"Keep a close eye on him." Agatha said. I nodded.

"That black hole, what is it for?" Emma asked.

"That black hole is a portal to another galaxy where Dominic is building an extremely powerful monster to end the world. One day, a huge lightning strike swept through the land and destroyed almost everything. A lot of our townspeople died and we've tried rebuilding, but Dominic keeps sending monster. We've spent more time improving the town's safety instead of repairing the town itself."

"You guys have been through a lot." Brook said.

"Indeed, we have, but now that you're here...you can defeat Dominic.... right?" Agatha asked. I looked towards the castle.

"We'll start heading that way now." I said. Agatha smiled.

"Thank you, heroes. I eternally bless you. Let the gods smile upon the defeat of Dominic." We said our goodbyes to Agatha and head off toward the mountain which had Dominic's castle perched on top of it. We were all silent as we thought about Agatha's words. Night drew and we setup camp to sleep, hoping that Dominic wouldn't send 1,000 monsters at us while we were asleep. We sat around the fire.

Conner broke the silence, "There is something you guys should know about me."

"Huh?" I asked. Conner stirred uncomfortably.

"I'm.... not a human...." He said. My eyes widened.

"What are you then?" Mason asked. Brook and Emma were already asleep. Conner played with his fingers.

"I'm a monster, created by my dad Dominic." He said. I took a huge gasp, mentally of course.

"How come you've never told us this?" Jeremy asked.

"I don't like referring to myself as a monster. My dad thinks of me more like a human, more like a failed monster." He said.

"Why does your dad hate you so much?" I asked.

"Well, when my Dad met my Mom, my Mom wasn't ready for kids yet. My dad tells me she died in a lab accident one day, but he never got his own child. He really wanted a son. My dad spent days creating me to look like a human, speak like a human, act like a human, but have stronger powers than a normal monster. He failed and I only got one fourth of the power I was supposed to receive. He still thinks of me as a failure." Conner explained. I nodded knowing his pain. Conner sighed.

"Sorry." Mason said.

"It's OK, that's why I'm helping you guys. To prove to my dad how strong I actually am." We nodded.

"Well, we've got a big day tomorrow. We better get some sleep." I said. Mason and Jeremy agreed and laid down.

"I don't need sleep, I'm a monster. I need to keep guard anyways; my dad can sense our presence from here." I nodded and laid down to go to sleep.
