Justin

I awoke, startled. The sound of thunder crashing and incessant pelting of raindrops made me groan. We had a limited amount of time at the safari and we couldn’t allow the weather to intervene our plans. I glanced at my phone to view the time, it was around eight and I’m sure Savannah would be awake by now. I called the reception hoping that she would once again answer the phone. I should have asked for her private number. The phone rang for a while and when I was sure it was going to go to voicemail, a deep male voice answered the call. I recognized the voice immediately as Savannah’s friend.

‘Hey Jack,’ I greeted cheerily.

‘Justin, how can I help you?’

‘Is Savannah around?’ I asked sheepishly.

‘I’m afraid not. She’s taking the morning off,’ he informed coldly.

‘Thank you,’ I said before ending the call.

I took a hot shower and changed into some sweatpants and a white t-shirt. I threw on a pair of my Adidas high tops and left the cottage. I walked in the pelting rain to Savannah’s cottage. I knocked on the door hoping I didn’t wake her. She opened the door in confusion wondering who would have braved this type of weather and ended up on her doorstep. She was dressed in shorts and a tank top. I took in her disheveled appearance and smiled.

‘Good morning,’ I beamed at her.

‘What are you doing here?’ she asked in confusion.

‘I’m here for breakfast,’ I shrugged. She looked at me and realized I was completely soaked from the downpour.

‘Sorry,’ she said scratching the back of her neck. She opened the door wider and allowed me inside. ‘I’ll be right back,’ she smiled as she disappeared into the bedroom. She returned a minute later with a fluffy white towel. She handed me the towel and moved into the kitchen. ‘What would you like for breakfast?’ she asked as she switched the coffee machine on.

I dried myself with the towel and swung it around the back of a chair to dry. ‘How about you relax and I’ll make breakfast?’ I offered.

‘So grilled cheese?’ she smirked. I raised my eyebrow at her. She blushed and turned away. ‘I did not say that,’ she murmured almost inaudibly. I laughed.

‘So you know that much about me?’ I asked curiously.

‘I read magazines from time to time,’ she shrugged.

‘That’s a surprise, you live in the middle of nowhere,’ I teased.

‘Sometimes I spend weekends in the city, almost once every month,’ she smiled and her eyes lit up.

‘Do you go alone?’ I questioned.

‘Yes I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself but sometimes my dad tags along. Let’s face it, he’s not exactly a city guy and the city just makes him cranky,’ she giggled.

‘You don’t seem like the city type either,’ I stated curiously.

‘I’m not,’ she shrugged. ‘I just enjoy meeting up with my friends who are studying in the city and next year I’ll be moving there for a while,’ she said sadly.

‘Why would you move to the city?’ I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. This place was definitely home to her, what would she do in the city so far away from her haven?

‘I’m going to start studying next year, this year I decided to take a gap year and learn as much as I could about the park.’

‘What are you going to study?’ I asked excitedly.
