Savannah
The next few months passed by in a blur. I spent a lot of my time with my father because I knew I wouldn’t be seeing him for a year once I moved to California to do my masters.
The start of the semester was actually the first week of August and I had to leave earlier than anticipated. I decided that it would be a good idea to leave at least a month earlier so I could get acquainted with my surroundings.
I landed at the Sacramento International Airport in the first week of July. My apartment was only a twenty minute drive from the airport and I decided to take a cab just this once. I hadn’t figured out the bus system yet and I didn’t want to end up in the wrong place on my first day. I knew that I would be using busses a lot but I would mostly be walking. My apartment building was opposite a small shopping mall and the building I would be spending most of my time in at the university was only a fifteen minute walk away.
I was extremely excited to be here and I felt so lucky to be finally accepted for the exchange student program at the University of California after trying for so many years.
A week later I was settled into my apartment and I knew the area fairly well after my countless walks around. It was one late Thursday afternoon and I was relaxing in the pool when I saw a girl around my age. She was grinning at me and I didn’t know if I should smile back. I smiled tentatively at her and suddenly she launched herself towards me. It was hilarious because she was not even in the pool. She ended up making a big splash and everyone around the area glared at her. She smiled sheepishly.
‘Hi,’ she grinned.
‘Hi,’ I laughed at her crazy antics.
‘My name is Gabriella. You live in the apartment next to mine,’ she grinned.
I smiled at her enthusiasm. ‘My name is Savannah.’
‘What are you studying?’ she asked curiously.
‘I’m here to get my masters in veterinary medicine,’ I smiled. ‘And you?’
‘I’m studying viticulture and enology.’
‘That sounds really interesting. So you’re going to be producing wine,’ I smiled. ‘Where are you from?’
‘I’m from New York,’ she wiggled her eyebrows suggestively. ‘My grandparents own a vineyard and one day I’m going to inherit it in case you were wondering why I chose viticulture and enology. You don’t sound like you’re from this country,’ she raised her eyebrow speculatively.
‘I’m from South Africa.’
‘Wow,’ her eyes widened in disbelief.
Two weeks later, Gabriella and I were already great friends. She was sitting in the study center area of our apartment building when I found her. She was grinning madly at her computer screen.
‘Gabriella?’ I asked hesitantly. I was afraid to ask why she was so excited.
She turned around and jumped out of her seat.
‘You know that I have my own car, right?’ she asked calmly batting her eyelashes. I frowned at her.
‘Yes … So what does that have to do with anything?’
‘We have this last weekend of freedom before the semester starts so I was wondering if you’d like to go on a road trip with me,’ she mumbled and avoided eye contact.
‘Where exactly do you want to go?’
‘The Los Angeles Lakers are playing Miami Heat at the Staples Center this Thursday,’ she said uncertainly.
‘I’ve always wanted to go to a basketball game,’ I shrugged. ‘I’d love to go with you.’
She started screaming excitedly and pulled me into a bone-crushing hug.
‘When do we leave?’ I asked excitedly.
‘Tomorrow,’ she smiled. ‘I’ll book us a hotel for the weekend and my boyfriend may or may not meet us there,’ she blushed. ‘It’s only a six hour drive,’ she shrugged nonchalantly.
‘Only six hours,’ I laughed.
‘Tomorrow is Wednesday, so once we get there we can rest until the game on Thursday,’ she grinned.
‘We’ll have a great time. I’ll see you tomorrow,’ I hugged her goodnight and made my way back to my apartment.
The trip to Los Angeles was great fun. Gabriella talked non-stop the entire way and I guess that’s what I loved about her. She was always making me laugh and it feels like I haven’t laughed genuinely in years.
Thursday evening we were ready to leave for the basketball game when there was a knock at our room door. I was confused but I opened the door. Standing there was a boy around my age. He was over six feet tall and he had the most mesmerizing blue eyes. His dark hair was sticking up in a million directions. I frowned at him in confusion and he grinned.
‘You must be Savannah,’ he stepped closer and hugged me. ‘I’m Luke, Gabriella’s boyfriend,’ he released me from the hug.
‘It’s great to finally meet you,’ I smiled.
Gabriella appeared beside me and hugged Luke.
The entire night, Gabriella and Luke were laughing and talking and I felt a bit out of place. They were both thrilled that Miami Heat won the game. After the game, they wanted to go out for drinks but I decided against it. I was lucky that the hotel was a three minute walk from the Staples Center. I took my phone out and used google maps to navigate my way to the nearest Starbucks.
After ordering my takeaway coffee, I began walking to the hotel. I had a creepy feeling that someone was watching me. I couldn’t help but look over my shoulder every few minutes wondering if someone was following me. When I got to the hotel, I was freaked out and I realized that the chances of Gabriella coming back tonight were slim. I tried to get some sleep hoping that the fear would disappear.
The next morning I was grumpy. I spent the entire night tossing and turning but the fear wouldn’t dissipate. I made my way downstairs to have some breakfast and I remembered that we didn’t include breakfast in our booking. I began walking again. I found a quaint bakery about ten minutes away from our hotel. I was happy that I wasn’t feeling the fear anymore. I was probably just paranoid last night. It was dark and I was alone in a city I’ve never been to before. I knew that Gabriella would probably spend the rest of the weekend with Luke and I didn’t want to be a third wheel so I decided that I would do some sightseeing. We would only leave Los Angeles on Monday as the new semester only started on Wednesday. I had three days to see as much of the city as possible. I was just a little disappointed that I would be seeing it by myself. I was counting on having a girl’s weekend with Gabriella. It was unfortunate that our plans had changed.
