Late that night, Miroku snuck out of the house and ran all the way back to the aquarium. As he snuck into the front gates, he was very careful not to get spotted by one of the surveillance cameras. As he walked along the pathway, he found exactly what he was looking for. Hidden behind the tank for the killer whales, was the door to the main surveillance room. Slowly, he opened the door to see what was inside. There was a night watcher there, but he was fast asleep. So as not to wake him, Miroku snuck over to the main controls. Not surprising, there turned out to be five cameras for the mermaid's tank.
“Okay, just a little reprogramming and were good to go.” Miroku quickly typed in a few keys and turned a couple of dials.
“There that should do it. Even if this guy wakes up, it’ll take him a while before he realizes he's watching reruns. Sure am glad I’ve always been a master with computers.” Quickly, Miroku snuck out of the surveillance room and headed for the mermaid's tank. Thanks to the bug he had installed, none of the alarms sounded when he entered the room. Walking up to the tank, he saw the mermaid sitting on the same boulder with her eyes closed. She also had the same sad look on her face as before. Quietly so as not to scare her, he gently tapped on the glass. One tap was all it took to get the mermaid's attention. She was surprised to see him, but she also seemed happy. Miroku watched in amazement as she swam up to him. Miroku brought his hand up to the glass while the mermaid placed her hand over his. At first, neither of them said anything.
“It is you, isn’t it? You’re the one who saved me from drowning in that storm?” For a while, the mermaid remained completely quiet.
“Yes, it was me.” She stated in a voice that sounded like a bell.
“So you can speak human.” The mermaid nodded.
“We are well known in the modern and ancient tongue.”
“When you say we, are there others like you?”
“Yes, we have always existed. But thus far, we have remained foreign to you humans.”
“If what you say is true, than why did you save me?” At first, the mermaid was unable to answer.
“I do not enjoy watching those around me suffer, even if they are human.”
“I see. Well than, do you have a name? That Konzake guy mentioned your name was Emerald, but I can't help but feel it's not.” The mermaid shook her head.
“No it is not. I have refused to speak to them so they simply improvised.”
“I see. Well than, my name is Miroku. May I ask yours?” The mermaid smiled.
“My name is Sango.”
“Sango? That name suits you well”. Sango smiled.
“How did you come to be in a place like this?” Miroku asked. Sango formed a sad look on her face as she lowered her hand from the glass.
“You were captured after saving me, weren’t you?” Sango nodded.
“Please do not blame yourself. You were still out cold when I left you on shore. There was nothing you could have done. “
“Yes, but still. You saved my life and yet here you are being held captive against your will. That is unacceptable.” Sango raised her head and looked at him.
“So be it. I am going to help you escape.” Sango jumped up.
“No please, you mustn’t do such a thing. You will surely be severely punished for doing so.” Miroku smiled and shook his head.
“Don’t worry about it. I will be fine. As long as I can help you leave this place. After all, you saved my life. It would be inhumane of me not to try and help you. Now tell me, are you able to leave the water?” Sango could see the determination in his eyes. Unable to think of a way to try and talk him out of it, she answered his question.
