Before this chapter gets started, I wanted to mention that yes, Ash can understand what Greninja says. I figured that because of their magic form, it would only make sense that he would be able to understand exactly what our favorite ninja frog is saying.
At Professor Oak's lab, Greninja and Ash happily reunited with several of their Kalos friends (not including Goodra, who was still in the wetlands). Greninja also met several of Ash's other Pokemon from his other travels, including an impressively large Charizard and a Sceptile.
"I didn't know you had a Sceptile too," he said to Ash, thinking back to Sawyer's Mega Sceptile. He hadn't seen Sawyer or his Sceptile for quite some time either and wondered how they were doing.
"Yeah, we traveled together in Hoenn and Sinnoh," Ash told him.
"He beat Tobias' Darkrai," Pikachu added. Greninja was amazed. He had known from personal experience that Ash was an unbelievably good trainer, but he hadn't known that he had beaten a Darkrai.
"A Darkrai? Really?" Hawlucha asked eagerly. "I want a go at some of that."
Greninja couldn't help but laugh; it was just like Hawlucha to say something like that. The Aztec hawklike Pokemon lived for battling. He even preferred to take damage instead of trying to avoid it.
"Well, I'm not sure if we'll find Tobias and his Darkrai anytime soon, but I have a feeling you'll be getting some serious battling in soon," Ash said seriously.
It was a mark of how grim he sounded that Hawlucha did not strike his signature pose and yell in triumph. The other Pokemon-those who didn't know what was going on-looked at their trainer worriedly. Greninja sat beside Ash as he began to explain the recent events of the past few months.
"There's a new threat that seems to be affecting every region in our world," he began. Greninja cringed as his words were met with gasps of horror.
"That was a little blunt, Ash," he reprimanded his trainer. Ash laughed sheepishly.
"Eh, sorry about that. I just thought I should tell you straight up," he said in embarrassment. His tone turned serious again as he continued. "We don't know what it is, but Pokemon in Kalos, Alola, and here in Kanto have been turning up in the Pokemon Centers in really bad shape."
"We've had twenty-five cases every single day in Alola for the past three and a half months," Lillie added.
"Twenty-five every day?" Noivern gasped. "How can there possibly be that many?"
"We don't know, and what makes it worse is that we have no way to fight back," Greninja replied. "We've never seen the attackers and those who were hurt can't tell us anything about them."
"So with that in mind, we have to get everyone out of here," Ash continued. "Here's our plan. Pidgeot, Charizard, we'll need to use you guys to fly us around to other regions so we can check on the damage there and perform any evacuations if necessary. Greninja, I hope you don't mind coming along too."
"Of course not, Ash," the bipedal frog Pokemon assured him. He smiled as he listened to Ash telling everyone exactly what their plan would be. This was why he had wanted Ash back-besides the fact that he had missed him, his trainer always kept a level head.
"The rest of you will be sent to Kalos to stay with Squishy and Z-2," Ash went on. "They're friends of ours," he explained at the looks of confusion on some of his Pokemon's faces. "Noivern, Hawlucha, Sceptile, I'm counting on you three to keep guard over everyone. Make sure a civil war doesn't break out and we'll get back to you as soon as possible."
"You got it, Ash," Hawlucha said determinedly.
"We won't let you down!" Sceptile added.
"Talonflame, Unfezant, you two will be our sentries. Keep an eye out for any suspicious people or Pokemon-but if you happen to see any, do not attack. We need to come up with a plan to fight them first," Ash said. "If you happen to see anyone like that, make yourselves invisible. Unless of course they confront you-then you can fight."
"Understood," Talonflame said, nodding.
"We'll keep a sharp eye out," Unfezant promised.
"And the rest of you, I want you to train as hard as possible," Ash finished. "Practice whatever moves you want, boost your speed, and increasing attack and defense power would be helpful too. I might not be there for some time, but I have friends in Kalos that could help you train-my Kalos Pokemon can introduce you to them. We need to be stronger than we've ever been."
"We should get going soon, Ash," Greninja spoke up, glancing up at the sky.
Ash nodded and stood up. "Right. Just let me get all your Pokeballs," he said, running into the lab. A few minutes later, he reemerged with his arms filled with Pokeballs. "Greninja, I still have yours too-unless you'd rather stay out of it for now?"
"Sure, that's fine. I like walking around," Greninja answered, surprised but pleased that Ash had kept his Pokeball intact.
"All right then, you can fly on Charizard," Ash agreed. He then returned everyone to their Pokeballs except Hawlucha, Noivern, Talonflame, Unfezant, Pidgeot, Charizard, Sceptile, and Greninja. "Noivern, I hope you don't mind if Sceptile rides on your back."
"That's fine, Ash. I can take it," Noivern said easily.
"I'll also need you to carry the rest of the Pokeballs," Ash continued apologetically, dropping the Pokeballs into his backpack and handing it to Noivern, who took it without protest.
"It's okay, they're not that heavy. And it's a short flight to Kalos," the bat-dragon Pokemon said. With that, he took off into the sky along with Unfezant and Talonflame. Greninja watched them go for a few moments before turning back to Ash.
"Isn't there a carrier limit for the number of Pokemon you can take?" he asked.
Ash looked a little sheepish. "Yeah...I might have removed the limit," he admitted, rubbing the back of his head.
"How did you manage that?" Lillie asked in astonishment.
"Don't ask, Lillie, he's just that amazing," Pikachu chuckled.
"Too true," Greninja agreed with a chuckle of his own. Was there anything Ash couldn't do?
Charizard and Pidgeot laughed as well. It would be one of the last times any of them truly laughed for a long time.
