It took five hours and four rest stop breaks, but eventually Greninja and his friends arrived in Lumiose City. Upon their arrival, they were greeted by Clemont and Bonnie, who had evidently been expecting them.
"Hi, Ash, Pikachu and Greninja! It's good to see you again," the little blond girl said happily.
"Hi, Bonnie," Pikachu said, waving at the Lumiose gym leader's sister.
"Hello, Bonnie," Greninja greeted her kindly. Dedenne, who still liked to travel in Bonnie's bag, popped out and chirped, "Hi, Greninja! Hi Ash! Hey, Pikachu."
"Who are your new friends, Ash?" Clemont asked, looking at Lillie, Pidgeot, and Charizard.
"This is Lillie, my friend from Alola," Ash said as Lillie waved at Ash's Kalos friends. "She used to be terrified of touching Pokemon, but she's gotten over that fear now."
Lillie laughed and scratched her head in embarrassment. "All thanks to you," she said sheepishly.
"And this is Charizard, I caught him in the Kanto region," Ash continued, gesturing towards the large fire lizard next. Clemont looked at Charizard in awe.
"Impressive. The flame on your Charizard's tail is bigger than any I've ever seen before," the scientist remarked. Greninja realized that he was right. Now that he thought about it, Ash's Charizard was also quite a bit larger than the average Charizard as well. Just what sort of training did they do at the Charicific Valley?
"Hello. You must be Clemont and Bonnie," Charizard roared, startling everyone slightly. "It's an honor to meet you."
"And finally Pidgeot, one of the first Pokemon I ever caught," Ash finished with a smile at Pidgeot. "I had to release her for a while so she could protect a flock of Pidgey, but they're all grown up now and can take care of themselves so she came with me."
Once Clemont and Bonnie were done admiring Ash's Pokemon (to Greninja's amusement, Bonnie still hadn't grown out of her habit of hugging every single Pokemon she laid eyes on), the Lumiose gym leader turned to Ash with a serious expression on his face.
"All right Ash, I think we both know why you're here. So come follow me; your friends are right this way," Clemont said, leading them towards a nearby Pokemon Center. When they arrived, Greninja did a double take. The entire Pokemon Center was jam-packed with all of Ash's Pokemon, traveling friends, and his friends' Pokemon too. But what made him happiest was the sight of the elegant fire fox Pokemon watching over Sylveon and a Togetic.
"Delphox? Is that you?" he asked.
"Greninja! I can't believe you're here!" Delphox yelled happily, running over and giving the frog-ninja Pokemon a hug. Greninja heard several of the other Pokemon snickering and felt his face go red.
"Hey, Serena," Ash called over to the honey blond girl, who was talking to Dawn and May. She turned around at the sound of Ash's voice and beamed.
"Ash! It's so good to see you again!" Serena exclaimed, giving the raven-haired boy the exact same treatment Greninja was receiving from Delphox. Greninja noticed that his trainer seemed a little embarrassed as well and smirked.
"Yeah, you too. I heard you became Kalos queen. Congratulations," Ash said, smiling at Serena. There was something different about the way he looked at her though, but Greninja couldn't quite figure out what it was.
"Thanks, Ash," Serena replied, blushing.
"I watched your winning performance. You looked great," Greninja whispered to Delphox. She smiled at him.
"Hey, Greninja. Come meet Ninetales," Noivern said, tugging him away from Delphox. Greninja sighed a bit and turned to see a Ninetales approaching him. Instead of the normal shade of whitish yellow, however, Ninetails had a coat as white as snow.
"Hello. Are you the Ninetales Ash caught in Alola?" he asked. Ninetales looked surprised that he knew who she was.
"Yes, I am. Who might you be?" she asked politely.
"This is Greninja, he and Ash traveled together with us in Kalos," Noivern answered.
"A Greninja? I think Ash mentioned something about you once," Ninetales remarked thoughtfully. "Something about a Zygarde and the Kalos region too..."
"Oh yeah, I had to protect the region after Team Flare tried to destroy it," Greninja replied offhandedly. "When I went to Kanto a few days ago, it was the first time I'd seen Ash in three years. Or any of my friends, for that matter, at least in person."
"I'll bet that was tough," Ninetales said sympathetically. Her eyes took on a mischievous gleam as she added, "By the way, what's the story with you and Delphox?"
Greninja paled as Hawlucha, Noivern, and Talonflame all smirked. "What do you mean?" he asked, trying to avoid the question.
Ninetales, however, just chuckled. "Oh, nothing. It's just that she talks about you a lot," the ice fox Pokemon replied.
Greninja couldn't see any way out of this mess, but was thankfully saved having to answer by Ash calling for everyone's attention.
"We're glad you could all make it," the raven-haired boy said. "But now we need to get to work. So everyone gather 'round; we're going to have our first meeting to discuss battle tactics."
