Greninja had lost track of Lillie and Ash about an hour ago. Fortunately, due to their bond, he could still tell that Ash was all right. With no sign of either of his friends or this Brock person they were searching for either, however, he decided to leave the forest and wait for Ash and Lillie to catch up.
"I could use something to eat too," Greninja remarked to himself as his stomach growled. "Maybe I'll find some berries on the way back..."
A few minutes later, he found a small clearing with several berry trees growing around it. Grinning in triumph, he jumped onto a branch and tugged off a ripe, green berry and began to chew. It was just as good as the berries that grew in Kalos.
Suddenly, he felt a wave of cold horror wash over him. Something was wrong. His instincts kept screaming at him to fight. Fight what? What was going on? Was he having some sort of breakdown? As if by instinct, Greninja tried to reach out to Ash-and was immediately hit by a wave of pain, a pain so great it nearly knocked the frog-ninja Pokemon unconscious. And yet there was nothing around him that could have caused him to feel such pain.
There was no doubt about it-Ash was hurt, and badly.
Greninja stood frozen as his desire to rescue his trainer clashed with the order said trainer had given not to worry about him if anything should happen. He didn't want to leave Ash alone in the forest, but he didn't want to upset him either. But then, he reasoned, Ash probably hadn't been expecting anything bad to happen when he had given that order. In the end, rescuing Ash won and Greninja bounded off into the forest to search for him.
"Ash, where are you?" he called out as he ran. "Can you hear me?"
Once again, the memory of his nightmare filled his mind. Dear Arceus, don't let me find Ash like that...
Then to his relief, he found Lillie wandering around near a stream. He hadn't found Ash, but at least she could help him find him. Lillie jumped when he approached her, evidently having not seen him standing there.
"Oh, Greninja! What's the matter? Did you find Brock?" she asked.
Greninja shook his head. "Ash is hurt! We have to go find him!" he said urgently. Unfortunately, Lillie had no idea what he was trying to say and simply looked at him in confusion.
"I'm sorry, what are you trying to say?" she asked apologetically. "I don't understand."
"Ash! Something's wrong! We need to save him!" Greninja shouted, making several gestures to emphasize his point. However, instead of clarifying anything, Lillie just looked even more perplexed.
"What's going on?" she asked.
Greninja fought the urge to scream. Honestly, she was starting to make him think she was being clueless on purpose. Thankfully, before he could act on his urge to throw a Water Shuriken at her, Pikachu suddenly burst in on the scene.
"Greninja! There you are!" the little yellow electric mouse shouted. "You've got to come with me-Ash and I were attacked and he's hurt!"
"I know, I sensed what was happening," Greninja replied. "All right, lead the way."
"Come on, he's right over this way!" Pikachu said, racing off into the forest with Greninja hot on his heels.
"Hey, wait! Where are you going?" Lillie called, but neither Pokemon answered her.
Finally, after what felt like hours of running but was probably only a few minutes, Greninja spotted Ash slumped against a tall oak tree. Not caring who was around, he ran over to his trainer's side and was relieved when his eyes fluttered open. There were no visible wounds on Ash's body, but that wasn't much comfort because he was obviously in a lot of pain. In fact, not being able to see what was hurting his trainer only made him even more worried.
"Greninja...Pikachu..." Ash groaned. "Wha-what are you guys...."
"Shh, don't try to talk. We need to get out of here," Greninja instructed gently.
"Are you all right?" Pikachu asked, jumping onto his partner's shoulder. He jumped off when Ash let out a hiss of agony, however. "Sorry!"
"I'm okay, buddy," Ash murmured, his eyelids drooping. Greninja felt a wave of panic hit as their connection, ever so slightly, flickered.
"Ash, come on. Try to stay awake," he coaxed, trying to calm his racing heart down. "We've got to get out of here, then you can sleep all you want."
"Greninja, don't worry. Just get yourselves out," Ash argued weakly, but the froglike Pokemon knew that if Ash didn't stay awake, he would be lost. They had to find help for him-and fast.
"Ash, I'm sorry. This will probably hurt, but I have to do this," he said apologetically. Ash just nodded, evidently too tired to argue. Moving slowly so as not to hurt Ash any more than he already had been, Greninja maneuvered his trainer to be carried over his shoulder. "All right Pikachu, let's go find Lillie again."
Greninja and Pikachu ran back to the stream, where Lillie was waiting for them. She jumped up and opened her mouth to start lecturing them, but stopped when she saw the state Ash was in.
"What happened to him?" she gasped. Then she shook her head. "No matter. We have to get him help now. Pikachu, you know this region as well as Ash does. Can you lead us to a Pokemon Center?"
Pikachu nodded and raced off in the opposite direction, Lillie running after him. Greninja followed them as well, happy that Lillie was taking charge for the moment. He could almost forgive her for stalling him when he needed her help to find Ash. Almost.
They reached the Pokemon Center about fifteen minutes later, which was just as well because Ash's breathing had started to become irregular. Paying no heed to the other patrons in the lobby, they burst into the infirmary, startling Nurse Joy.
"Nurse Joy, please help us! Our friend was hurt and we don't know what to do for him!" Lillie pleaded. Nurse Joy took one look at Ash and gasped.
"Oh my! Here, give him to me," she said insistently, wheeling out a stretcher. "Just place him right on here."
Greninja gently placed Ash down on the stretcher and watched as he was wheeled away into the back room. There was nothing they could do now except wait and hope that they hadn't been too late.
