Prologue

"He's turning out to be quite the hero, despite… everything," Commander Kaiser said to his companion as they watched a boy on a camera monitor.
"Just as you said he would," Agent Hartmann replied admiringly, but Commander Kaiser shook his head.
"But there's still something missing."
"What are you talking about?"
He gestured to the video monitor and turned the volume up. "Watch him."
It showed a boy in a barren room in the process of taking his clothes off. As he removed his shirt, many cuts and scars were revealed on his back and shoulder to accompany those on his face and arms.
He stripped down to his boxers and climbed into bed, and the lights automatically shut off.
"Is he asleep?" Agent Hartmann asked.
The Commander held his hand up, silencing him.
They waited thirty seconds, a minute, then Agent Hartmann looked questioningly at Commander Kaiser.
"Listen," the Commander said softly.
And if you listened closely enough just as the two men were, you could hear the muffled noise of the boy's breath catching, as if he were trying not to cry.
