Rankin sat in his chambers on Dromund Kaas, meditating. He had heard of what happened on Korriban, and knew that his apprentice would be coming for him.

Valen stepped into his old master's chambers and stood behind him. Rankin sighed and stood up, then turned around. "I never thought of you as a traditionalist, Valen."
"It's Emperor Valen now, and yes, I am very traditional. Is it not tradition for an apprentice to kill his master?" Valen responded. A faint grin passed over Rankin's face, as if amused.
"Do what must be done, boy. But know I will never accept you as my Emperor." Valen nodded and said,
"Wasn't planning on it, goodbye, master." He placed the blade against his former master's chest and ignited the blade. Rankin grunted, then fell to his knees as Valen ripped out his blade. Valen gently laid his fallen friend in his bed and closed his eyes, then left. He had an Empire to subjugate, and the Republic to crush.
