You never know how the future holds. You can not change the past, but you can make the future a better place. Each of our actions can change the course of the future, so it's up to us to make the right choices. After all that I had seen in my life, I thought nothing could surprise me...... I was wrong..... If I had known what I was going to live, I never could believe it. Anyway, the world as I know will never longer be the same, and my life has changed...... Forever. Here is my story.....

October 22, 1915.

In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

My name is Mathias Booker, 22 years. 6 feet 2 inches. Brown hair, blue eyes. Not an athletic body, but I live with. It is now several months that we are at sea, patrolling to try to surprise the enemy ships that are hiding in the area. I celebrated my birthday there a few days, but without my family this time, only with a few of my comrades. My family has perhaps sent letters, but I would not be surprised that I never receive them, given the current situation. But I think about them like I know they think about me.

I was born into a normal family in a small country village near Paris. My little sister and I, we never wanted for anything and our parents love us immensely. We are very united. But in 1914, war broke out and chaos has settled everywhere. The French army began to forcibly recruit, and my father, too old, I had to being volunteer and get involved in the army, to the despair of my family. This was not easy, I managed to survive, but I have seen so horrible things that they will haunt me for the rest of my life. I also killed for the first time, but by duty. This is a very strange and unpleasant sensation of to take a life to someone, even if we know that this stranger would have killed us without hesitation.

I do not have many friends in the military, and the atmosphere is rather dark on the boat. Everyone is on the edge. Some guys play the bad boys and looking for trouble, especially with the lower ranking, and it makes a mess. Which band of morons! They would do better to unite themselves and fight against our enemies rather than between them. I look forward that this war takes end and I can finally go home. I hope, if I survive, to find love. I never had a girlfriend in my life, and I hope one day to know that sensation.

Today was pretty quiet. There it's the night. I am in my cabin, sitting on my bunk, in the process of writing. Outside is the storm. It rains, thunder rumbles, and the mist and so thick that I can not see more than at one meter. The boat is rocked, I have the impression to being in a washing machine. I don't know if I could sleep that night. Maybe it will happen something unexpected this night. Only time will tell....

After having finished writing his personal logbook, Mathias closed the book and got up from his bunk to store it in his bag. John, another soldier, aged 24, sits on his bed and reads a book by the dim glow of a light. John is a good friend of Mathias, they met at the camp where they were assigned and became friends. Mathias returned to sit on his bed, looking at a picture of him and his family, taken a few months before the start of the Great War. The young man looks at the photo without a word, with a puzzled look. John turns to his friend and sees that he seems depressed.

(John): "Your family misses you, is not it?"

(Mathias): "Of course."

(John): "Don't worry, I'm sure you'll see them again."

(Mathias): "Who knows? It's not for myself that I'm worried, but for them. Anything can happen in this fucking damn war."

(John): "It's true, but you must remain confident, otherwise you will end up going crazy as some people are already. Mike for example. Since he learned that his girlfriend was killed in a bombing, he is no longer the same. His superiors are constantly forced to monitor him to prevent him to commit suicide. You do not want to end up like this?"
