The Pain of a Simple Smile

I can see that you try,
But you're just wasting your time.
On someone like me.
There's just no point.
I'm a stubborn girl,
You know that from the start.
But what I don't understand,
Is why are you trying?
Why so determine to make me smile?
When you succeed,
I would smile,
However, the past would flood into my mind.
The sweet words you once said to me,
Brings along the pain,
That your no longer here beside me.
You're trying to make me smile.
I can see that you are,
But it hurts far to much when you succeed.
I don't want you to make me smile.
Its not because I hate you,
Or that I despise you.
I just can't take the pain of the past.
It all floods my mind so quickly,
The moment my lips curve,
Into a hopeful smile,
The pain will come crashing in.
I can't take that pain,
Not anymore.
This is the pain of a simple smile.
It hurts so much,
I no longer want to smile.
I just can't any more.
