I waited by the fountain for Natalie. I had taped a sticky note on her locker saying where I was. I had been waiting for her for twenty minutes. I glanced at my watch. I sighed, Natalie was never early. Leave being tardy in her capable hands.
"What is wrong with you?" came her annoyed voice from behind me.
"I've been waiting for twenty minutes, Nat" I turned to face her. "Where were you?"
"I was in happy land until i saw your note." she said, raising it up "God!" she threw it at me "You are such a child!"
Offended and angered, I replied "I'm such a child? You're the one who made me wait for twenty minutes. Dad's going to pick us up and we're supposed to stay together until he does"
"You don't think I know that? My god, you're such a baby, Jaymes! Stop doing every single thing my parents tell you! God! How old are you, two?" she whisper-yelled
There were two words that hurt the most;
My Parents
Those two words spoke as if they were only hers. It also said that I wasn't part of their family.
"And by the way, I'm not going home with you" she said "I made new friends who want to drop me home. So, you ride with dad and I'll be home in a while" with that said, she turned on her heel and walked off.
I stood in my spot until I was sure she wasn't coming back. I took my bag and made my way to the office. Dad wasn't here yet.
"Hello, dear" greeted a woman from behind the counter. She didn't look a day over twenty-seven years old with curly, platinum blond hair that reached her shoulders and light green eyes "Did you need anything?"
"Is it okay if I make a quick call?" I asked her
"Go ahead" she smiled before she went back to typing on the computer
I dialled in the house number and waited.
"Hello, Good Afternoon. Rivers Residence" came Annie's voice
"Mom" I breathed
"Jaymes, sweetie. Where are you?" Annie asked
"I'm still at School. Where's dad?" I asked back
"He's here. Natalie said you were catching a ride with a friend" Annie replied
"I haven't made any friends yet, mom" I told her, sighing "I just waited here in School. I thought dad was coming"
"Oh my goodness" Annie gushed out, then away from the phone "Natalie! You and I are going to have a talk, you hear me?" then back to me "Jaymes, sweetie, I'm sending your father over to you right now"
"Mom," I sighed "no. Nevermind"
"What do you mean no?"
"I mean it's fine. I'll walk"
"No, it's too far. It's getting dark and I don't-"
Mom, come on. I'm sixteen for crying it out loud. "No, really. It's Okay. I'll take a ride or something. I'll be fine"
"Jaymes-"
"Give me like- an hour?"
"Fine. One hour. If you aren't here before then, your dad's going over there"
"Okay. See you soon. Bye"
I placed the phone down gently. Trying not to grit my teeth. She told them I caught a ride home?
