Knight

Chapter 12

Trisha wheels over the ultrasound machine and places it on Elle's stomach. Immediately the room is filled with the sound of a heartbeat and they can see the little bean on the screen. Except it's not as small as Elle would expect if she's only been pregnant for a couple weeks.

Sensing Elle's bewilderment, Trisha explains, "woman give birth to a New Species baby in 5 months. The babies are completely healthy when they are born. The fast gestation is due to their altered genetics. Since they are part feline, canine and primate the babies are born in that species gestational period.

Elle can't believe the words she's hearing. First she's sprung upon the fact that she is pregnant, and second she finds out she will have this baby in less than 5 months. What's next she thinks.

Trisha gives Elle a sympathetic look. "I know this is a lot to take in all at once, but there is something else. You cannot tell anyone about this baby. New Species offspring are protected from the outside world by keeping them secret. If agencies like Mercile were to figure out the males can breed with human women, those that are still locked up out there would be bred and their children taken away to do who knows what with them. It will be difficult because I know there are people you would love to tell the news to, but we cannot let that happen."

Elle looks over to the wall, not being able to look anyone in the eyes while she processes this roller coaster of a ride she's been on today. On the one hand she's sad she will not be able to share her pregnancy with her loved ones, but on the other hand she understands what Trisha told her. She can't bare to think about those that are still locked up and what this news could bring to them, and the innocent little babies that would be created for Mercile's entertainment(research).

Finally looking Knight in the eyes, she can see his worry. "I promise I won't tell anyone of my pregnancy. The risk is too great."

The relief in Trisha's face is obvious. "There are some women in Homeland and Reservation that have children with New Species men. You can go talk with them whenever you need to to know what you are in store for. And you can talk with me about it as well, I should write the handbook." Trisha winks at her and Elle instantly understands her meaning. She must have a New Species child as well.

Knight and Elle thank Trisha, Midnight and Emerald for their concern and care. The whole trip down to the first level of the hospital floor she could feel Knight's eyes on her.

Sighing she turns towards him and leans in, "I'm not upset about this news or with you. Shocked is more the word for it. The thought of pregnancy was ruled out for me when we became mates, but now knowing it's possible makes me happy. I wish we had more time as mates just you and I, but now we have a third little person to add to our family."

Knight hugs Elle close to him and says, " I've been worried about you being upset with me about that. Now I'm more worried of you getting sick or hurt because of this pregnancy. When I received news you were in so much pain you couldn't walk, my whole world stopped. It's been such a short time we've been together but it feels as if it's been a lifetime."

Elle couldn't agree more with the last part of what he said. It has been only a couple of months, but it feels like years. "You don't have to worry about me so much during this pregnancy Knight. I feel like this is meant to be and I couldn't be happier."

Knight grumbled and growled, "there will never be a time I don't worry about you."
