THREE | a maiden's virtue

THE RED SUN ENLIGHTENED THE sky in an array of colours, it was a soothing sight to see for the Princess who was in her chambers breaking her fast with Lady Buckwell. Although the table was filled with her favourite foods, the Princess' mind was elsewhere. A small ray of sunshine reflected on her face by the use of the looking glass on her nightstand. If she looked too long at it, her eyes would be filled by black and green spots for the rest of the day. Yet it had something alluring and so Rhaena kept doing it until she could see the shadows dance.

"Where is your mind, Rhaena?" Lady Buckwell asked politely. "Did you not hear what I said?"

Rhaena shook her head as she looked at her dear friend. "I am afraid not, forgive me." It was the first time that Rhaena looked truly at the food in front of her, her handmaidens had made sure that everything the Princess liked to eat in the morning was present. While they had to do with porridge, for the Princess they arranged a breakfast consisting of strawberries and sweetgrass, honey, warm milk, oat bread, dates, melon with hard-cooked eggs, hot bread, crisp fried fish, Blackberry preserves, a rasher of bacon and wedges of cheese. In all truth, the Princess was not hungry at all. Her stomach felt similar to battleground after a great battle, she was just nervous, that was all.

"Are you not hungry?"

"I am not, perhaps because the hour is earlier than I am used to," Rhaena assured the brunette woman with a smile. She did not need her household to be worried about her, although she had sensed a strange sensation in her upper legs for most of the previous night. She had been rather warm too even though she had not known why since she had felt well during the day.

With a knock on the door, her handmaidens entered the chamber with porcelain teapots and fresh mint leaves. While her handmaidens filled her cup with hot water, Rhaena looked at her handmaidens, who were dressed in white for the celebrations as well. They were no ladies-in-waiting, like Serena Buckwell, but mere handmaidens in service of their future Queen. Their duties were manageable but of great honour, the fact that they were allowed to be in the presence of the Princess was more than the three girls had ever hoped.

Not that the girls did not strive for their positions, Violet's mother was the head of the minor noble house of Longwaters, her uncle was Rennifer Longwaters, the Chief Undergaoler of the dungeons of the Red Keep. They had used multiple tools to make sure the girl was to serve Princess Rhaena.

Gracia was a bastard daughter of a very powerful Lord, although the other girls did not know which Lord. Violet gossiped that she was the bastard daughter of Aerys and one of his mistresses or that she was the lovechild of Luthor Tyrell who quickly had to send her away before lady Olenna would find out. When Rhaena heard of this, she forbade her to speak about it any longer.
