KING'S LANDING

Early Spring 278 A.C.
4 years before the start of Robert's Rebellion

ONE | a dream of spring

THE FIRST RAYS OF SUNLIGHT painted the sky in an explosion of colours. The red tones were a welcoming contrast against the blue stillness as if they were the start of something new and exciting.

At least that was Rhaena Targaryen's opinion as her purple eyes scanned the sky determinedly. For the capital of The Seven Kingdoms it was just another day, but not for Rhaena. She had awoken long before the dawn for the past week, nervously waiting for the first rise of the glorious spring sun to melt the icicles in her bones and loosen her tight muscles. She needed it desperately, just like she needed the air in her lungs.

Now that it was finally here, she embraced the small beacon of hope that she had longed for with a soft chuckle. The warmth kissed her pale face like only a long lost lover could do. She breathed in deeply while her small arms wrapped around her shoulders in consolation. With her eyes were closed, the sun formed orange dancing silhouettes against her closed eyelids.

With a deep sigh, she hoped that the castle walls - that locked her up - would turn into something different than cold stone. The winter still hung in the walls and silence in the hallways. Cold and tenseness and sadness and darkness...

But winter was not to blame for this, it was not the weather that haunted the castle. King's Landing was blessed with soft winters of mostly rain and clouds. Nothing compared to the real winters that appeared at other places of The Seven Kingdoms.

Yet the capital never felt this cold. The aftermath of the Defiance of Duskendale was still visible in the court and haunted the castle with shadows and ghosts like a dark veil that prevented warmth and sunlight from coming in.

It was exactly a year ago that the King - Aerys Targaryen, second of his name - was kidnapped by the rebels of Duskendale. It all happened because the Lord of Duskendale was jealous of the port of King's Landing. Lord Denys of Duskendale ceased to pay his taxes to demonstrate his jealousy and invited his Grace to talk about new arrangements. But when the King arrived he was imprisoned by the rebels.

Rhaena remembered it like it had been only yesterday, she had been with her mother at the moment the news arrived. The court panicked and some noble women of the court even wept for her father.
