McKayla
As soon as Kris and I land back in Chicago we have to head to a doctors appointment for a check up on the baby. It was a little later than usual 'five month check up' because we were in Arizona for a while, but better late than never, right? The nurse checks to make sure myself and the baby are okay and we're both doing good, and to which we were doing great. The baby is growing at the right pace and she checks the heart beat. Hearing that little sound was enough to send me over the edge with happiness. Finally came the part of the sonogram where we could finally find out the gender of the baby.
"Is this your first kid" she asks me getting me comfortable on the bed.
"Yup" I confirm and she smiles.
"Well you're doing great. Both of you look nice and healthy. Now lets see what we have here" she says moving the little device over my growing belly.
"Alright guys... it looks like you have a healthy little girl" she tells us and I find myself smiling big. A baby girl... that's amazing. I look over to Kris who was fixated on the screen with a smile matching mine. I wonder what was going through his head right now. They clean the gel off me and send us on our way with pictures of the little girl growing in my stomach.
Before we head home Kris insists on picking up the paint to get started on the babies room. We decide on a night time themed room, the walls will be a deep grey with white stars everywhere. It was unisex for when we want to have more kids and they can grow up in there too. I mean who doesn't like the stars? After we pick up the paint and other accessories we head home to get started. The room was empty and covered in tarps ready for us to paint.
"I can't believe we're going to have a baby girl" Kris says randomly as we cover the walls at a nice pace. We had been painting for hours and actually already got a lot accomplished. Thankfully it was quick drying paint.
"I know right? What are some names you were thinking of" I wonder.
"I like McKenzie. You know, we can have Big Mac and Little Mac" he shrugs.
"I like that" I smile. It was actually really cute.
"What about you. What did you have in mind" he wonders.
"I liked Alexis. Or Lexi" I think out loud.
"McKenzie Alexis Bryant" he says and I stop painting. Those names were actually beautiful.
"I really love that" I admit.
"Me too" he smiles before returning back to the walls. Once the walls were all grey we start putting the stars up. Halfway through I get hungry like always and head down to get some food. I fix us sandwiches and open a bag of chips before returning to the room. When I come back I see Kris writing something on the wall with so much precision. I watch for a little trying to piece together what it was but give in.
"Watcha doing" I singsong sitting in a chair in the corner of the room.
"Writing" he replies.
"I got that much. What are you writing" I reiterate.
"A quote. It says, 'reach for the moon, and if you miss you'll land upon the stars.' I know you're big on the quotes and the stars so I was going to surprise you" he shrugs.
"That's beautiful Kris, thank you." I finish my lunch and help Kris paint the rest of the stars. He was actually really artistic, but he was good at everything so I wasn't very surprised. Finally we finish up with the paint and have to let it dry over night. I stand in the doorway and look at what we've created. It was beautiful.
I return downstairs to find Kris on the computer searching through Pinterest like I do. We only usually use that to plan the wedding and I was kind of scared he was changing everything to baseball themes. Which I wouldn't actually mind, but his mom defiantly would considering how much work she's put into this wedding.
"Whatcha doing" I ask standing behind him and starting to massage his shoulders.
"Planning your baby shower" he says slowly trying to stay focused.
"You really don't have to..."
"I want to" he claims looking into my eyes. I smile to myself after being reminded how lucky I am that Kris is such a genuine guy. I place a passionate kiss on his lips to show my admiration. He returns to the laptop and I go back up to the room. Looking around I can see it all now, where the crib and changing table will go. It's all coming together and I was getting more excited with each passing second. I feel my phone vibrate and see that it's Kris' mom so I answer it.
"Hi Sue" I say answering the phone.
"How's my girl" she asks. I loved it when she called me that.
"I'm doing good. Kris and I painted the babies room today and he's planning the baby shower right now" I explain.
"That's sweet of him. And don't you worry... I'll help him out" she whispers causing me to laugh.
"I'm not worried" I admit. They couldn't do wrong if they tried.
"I was calling just to go over some wedding plans" she informs me. She sends me what the save the date invitations looked like and I was really impressed. The wedding theme was dark blue and silver since it's in the winter, so that's what color of the cards were. We would send those out tomorrow to the list we decided on earlier. We were able to rent out a chapel in downtown Chicago for the wedding then the reception would be in Wrigley because of course. She had found some center pieces and other little details and would send me the pictures later but that's all she's gotten to so far.
"Thank you so much, you're a lifesaver" I sigh.
"Of course. You just worry about your baby..." she trails off.
"Girl" I smile.
"I've always wanted a baby girl, I hope she's just like you. Watching you grow up was a privilege, I can't wait to do it all over again" she says softly.
"Sue are you trying to make cry? These crazy hormones are hard enough to control without any help from you" I sniffle.
"No, I just am so proud of you and Kris. Letting you guys both go at the same time was so impossibly hard but it makes it all worth it knowing what you're creating now" she replies.
"Love you Sue."
"Love you too Big Mac."
