The only thing I can think of?

Josh isn't holding my hand any more.

" You're strumming on my heart strings, like you are a grade 8, but I've never felt this way."

Chapter Seven

My eyes open and for a few seconds, I can only see white. When my image clears, I glance around. I get up and shakily start walking around.

Josh, Josh, where is Josh?

There are paramedics and ambulances everywhere. Then I see Josh, on a stretcher, being wheeled into an ambulance. I run over and try to get to him, but a paramedic stops me.

" What are you doing? Go away," she snaps.

" Please. He's my husband," I plead and for a second I'm scared that she won't believe me. But she must hear the pain in my voice because she lets me in.

I sit beside him and take his limp hand. It's only a matter of minutes before we reach the hospital.

They sit me down in the waiting room and take him away. That's when I really become a wreck. I start sobbing loudly and soon a nurse comes over to me.

She crosses her arms over her chest and says, " Oh, honey, look at you. We've gotta get that," she points to my face, " cleaned up."

I bring my hand to my cheek and wince. There's a deep wound and I look at the blood on my hand.

The nurse cleans it and bandages it.

Soon after that, a doctor comes and gets me. While walking through the corridors, we start to discuss Josh. " His heart rate is slow. We're going to have to operate on him. You can choose to be there if you want."

I nod. " I have to be there. He was there for me." I say. The doctor nods and hands me a gown. I throw it on and we head into the operating room.

Josh is laying on the table, with no shirt on. I take his hand and look at his face while they cut open his stomach. I can't look.

Then they stitch him up. His heart rate is getting faster and they all look confused. And then, suddenly. . .

Silence.

I scream and slap him hard across the face. He doesn't stir. I pump my hands on his chest. One of them puts a hand on my shoulder, " You can't save him."

" Shut up," I snap, " you don't know anything."

I keep saying 'wake up', chanting it like a prayer. Then I punch his chest hard.

" Wake."

Punch.

" The."

Punch.

" Hell."

Punch.

" Up."

Punch.

" Josh."

And his tired eyes flash open. I let tears pour down my face and collapse on his chest. I continue to cry onto his chest.

" Jennifer," Josh chokes out.

" Jesus Christ, Josh, never leave me again, okay?" I manage.

He nods weakly. " Never."
