"I'm sorry, Sugawara-senpai, but at this time I can't trust you"
Your words left him shocked and a bit disappointed. He couldn't help but think about it everyday since it happened.
It was a late October afternoon and he had just finished his volleyball practice. He had sent you a text message because he needed to ask you something.
When you got to the gym, he looked flustered. He seemed to struggle a bit, but he finally asked you out. But you sighed and spoke those words, then you left.
He didn't understand what it was about and neither did you, actually. You had grown really fond of Sugawara: you thought he was caring and gentle and besides he was handsome. And yet something pushed you to reject him. After that you moved to another school without telling anyone which it was.
From that day you always received messages from him asking you for explanations or simply wishing you a good day, but you never replied. You wanted to, but something told you not to.
It was an awful situation.
The real issue was that you had gone through really bad experiences with boys, so you could trust no one... neither Sugawara.
Your heart kept on telling you that you needed him and that you could trust him, but your brain told you to run away because of your fear.
The last message you received from him was "No matter what, I will find you. I will never give up on you".
You cried after reading those words.
"Hey, Suga! Where are you going, all at once?" Daichi, as the captain of the team and as a friend, asked him.
"I need to go somewhere" Sugawara replied, holding his sports bag in one hand and some papers in the other.
"Are you still looking for her?" Daichi asked "Maybe you should..."
"I'm not giving up" the silver-haired guy spoke and then walked away.
Daichi found himself smiling at how he cared about you.
The papers he had in his hands had some high school names written on them.
First, he heard from his grandma that one of her closest friends was your aunt. This was how he got to know the exact place you had moved to: you still were in Miyagi prefecture. To be exact, you lived in Sendai.
He had done some researches and wrote down some of the names of high schools you could possibly have moved to. It was a quite long list and it took him a lot of time, but he soon found out you didn't attend Aobajosai, Oogiminami, Araigawa and Kesenike.
The last name on his list was Shiratorizawa. He actually thought it was the least likely to be your new high school since the entrance exam is notoriously really difficult.
Sugawara smiled a little, thinking about Kageyama having failed the test and being ashamed about that. But then he remembered students could enter Shiratorizawa through sport scholarships, too. And you were the strongest tennis player in the school, actually.
He was optimist that day, when he entered Shiratorizawa. His first impression was the same as the feeling of a town person visiting a really large city. He couldn't believe that their volleyball club had its own bus and cheering squad. Plus, the high school provided dorming for its students.
"Sorry, does [Surname] [Name] attend this school?" he spent all day asking this question to everyone he met. He was hopeful at first, but soon he found out that nobody knew you. It was in the late afternoon that he sat helplessly on the ground with his head and feet aching, his stomach empty and growling.
It was then that he saw him. Ushijima Wakatoshi, the first spiker of the Country. He passed by and seemed to pay no attention to Sugawara.
"Sumimasen"
Sugawara addressed him. Wakatoshi turned to face him. He was taller and bolder. Sugawara felt some chills run down his spine. The tall ace didn't speak a word but his eyes encouraged Suga to go on.
"I'm looking for a girl named [Surname] [Name]... I'm 99% sure she attends this high school. Do you know her, perhaps?"
"Hmmm..." Wakatoshi hummed "And what about that 1%? And how do I know you're not spying on our team?"
Sugawara didn't reply.
"However..." he went on "I feel I can trust you. I know her. Come"
Sugawara thought that he spoke like a robot and that he made him feel uneasy, but he'd do anything to find you. The situation was awkward and really strange.
Wakatoshi led the silver-haired setter to a tennis court. There you were playing against another girl, who looked tired. You scored an incredible point and then you and the other girl decided to take a break. The girl's eyes were shining in pure admiration. You were sitting on a bench and wiping away the sweat from your forehead.
As you spotted Wakatoshi, you waved to him, but you literally froze when you saw Sugawara with him. Your heart was pounding with a thousand different feelings: happiness and sadness, anger and curiosity, attraction and the need to reject.
Time seemed to have stopped. Your tennis racket and towel had fallen down as you stood up in pure astonishment and surprise, your eyes filled with tears. The two boys approached you.
The silence was filled with Ushijima's words now: "I somehow expected this to happen soon...".
"B-but... you..." your voice was shaking from the emotions inside of you.
"Don't worry..." and he embraced you "I saw you were not happy with me... There was something you deeply missed. Your lips never showed a smile. I suppose he was the missing piece"
You burst out crying as you held your ex.
"S-sorry..." you just said. Then he gently caressed your hair, set you free from his hug and slowly walked away.
You and Sugawara were alone. He was staring but you couldn't look back at him. He suddenly held your hands and you simply said: "He understood me... I feel somehow wrong. I feel like he deserved my love... but I couldn't give it to him...".
"[Name]... I'm here now... Let's go home".
You kissed his lips.
