***Short note***
Hello, hoping that some of you still remember me, I'm back!
This is the first one shot story I write without nobody asking me for it, I thought this was the best way to go back to writing something.
Enjoy the read!

"You should go. You need some fun after all you've been doing for me. Don't worry, I'll be fine".

It's with these words spinning in my head, her warm hand and smile in my heart that I was making my way to the gym. I felt tired and stressed out. How on earth was I supposed to take my mind off my problems, though?

Granny was seriously ill. I had been spending the past nine months looking after her day and night to the point I had even moved to her place to never leave her alone. When I went out for classes and practice or to hang out with friends sometime, there would usually be my mother to replace me, but this time granny was totally alone. And I was scared to leave her.

I was so scared I had texted Ryu, my best friend, to go to granny's place for the afternoon. Granny knew him since we were children, when we used to play in the mud in her garden.

In the very moment I was thinking of it, helplessly smiling in spite of the situation, I heard my phone make the noise of a notification.

"[Name]-chan, you won't believe this. Remember when I told you I asked Kiyoko-san out for the 32nd time? She said yes for this afternoon! But if I go, how will you do with granny?"

I sighed. Somehow, I couldn't be happy for him at all. I guess I was too worried to be, but I tried not to show that feeling.

"That's amazing! You have to go, don't worry. Granny's not gonna be alone more than three hours though. Have fun"

"I probably shouldn't go to the match" I thought. But as I was taking my phone out of the pocket to call my captain about it, the screen showed a text from her.

"[Surname], I hope you are coming for the match. I know your grandmother is not doing fine, but those are the finals to go to the spring tournament... we need you because you're the only libero we have since [Friend's Name] broke her arm last week.
See you later"

I sighed again and hoped granny would be fine for three hours without me. But hell yeah was I anxious!

Receiving a ball properly is hard when you have so much going on.

But who cares then? Nobody sees what's going on inside of your head. They only see mistakes. Not your teammates, but your opponents. And this is something I can't bear. They just can't cheer and scream for a point they scored because of my weakness.

I have to make my team win for Granny. I won't let a ball fall on the floor in my zone without at least touching it!

The smiles of my teammates, our yellow and black Jozehnji uniforms, the sound of the ball being received and hit, all the screaming made me at least stay focused on the match, if not forget about problems. We won the first set rather easily, but the following ones were so hard to get. So we had to play until the tie break.

The match was taking so long. I was worn out by the few hours of sleep and the lenght of the match. My legs didn't seem to want to move, but I just had to make another little effort. I had to do it, otherwise all my, all OUR hard work would be in vain. I prayed that granny could be safe.

After another long battle, we managed to win.
All my teammates were crying tears of joy. I was just smiling warmly, as if even crying was too much for the little spark of energy I had left inside of me.

I was very happy when I went to the locker room. I took my phone to call granny as the first thing to do, but I had a terrible surprise. It was a text from Ryu and by reading it I knew I should have stayed home.

"Granny's at the hospital. Come asap"

I rushed out.

Sweaty, messy hair, my uniform still on, my heart pounding and my heavy bag swinging. This is how I entered the hospital ward granny had been taken to.

Ryu was walking back and forth out in the corridor, out of the operating room. Panting from the long run, I let the bag fall on the floor and threw myself on one of the chairs.

After some silence, Ryu said: "She's serious".

"Serious?!" I sighed "I shouldn't have gone, I knew it". Then, after a time which could have been a few seconds or many minutes, in which I kept my head in my hands and stared at the floor in its every smallest detail, I jumped up in anger and punched Ryu in his face.

He spat blood and put his hand on his nose. He was barely standing on his own legs.

"HOW COULD YOU NOT BE THERE TOO?! I WAS SILLY BUT YOU WERE SHITTY! HOW COULD YOU PREFER GOING OUT WITH THAT GIRL RATHER THAN STAYING BY MY SIDE?!" I yelled and started punching him into his chest until I was able to. Then I started crying and hid my face in the collarbone of the same person I had been punching so hard.

Still, the most surprising thing was that he didn't stop me. For how cranky he was, he used to react as soon as somebody offended him. But this time he didn't.

As I felt the warmness of one of Ryu's arms hugging me, I lifted my chin and looked at him. His face was swollen. His other hand was placed on the left side of his chest.

"You're right" he said with difficulty and after coughing a bit "I should have been there from the start. But when I was on the date I couldn't take my mind off of it, so I dropped Kiyoko and went to granny's. And thank god I was there, you know. I couldn't leave granny alone and I couldn't do that to you".

"You were there?" I asked, my eyes wide open, parting from him.

"Yeah. Screw Kiyoko... you're more important. You know... family first" he said looking away, with a tint of pink spreading on his cheeks.

"I'm so sorry I punched you. You didn't deserve it. Plus, you look so ugly now" I replied.

"It's nothing, I deserved that. After all, I shouldn't have had any doubt on what to do" he weakly smiled "And by the way, I always look ugly".

"Not for me" I blushed and avoided eye contact "I-I mean, I'm used to your shitty face. But... you know... apart from granny being ill... I think I didn't want you to go out with that Kiyoko in the first place".

Silence filled the corridor until I fell asleep with my head on Ryu's shoulder.

When I woke up, it was morning. After a few seconds, in which I realized what was happening, the doctor's voice reached my consciousness.

"Good morning. I'm glad you managed to get some sleep" he said.

"How's granny?" I stood up abruptly, now being wide awake. Ryu was sleeping and snoring a bit sitting with his arms crossed and his head leaning on the wall behind.

"It was hard work and she will need to rest and recover, but she is safe and out of danger. She is sleeping now". Those words caused me to smile in pure happiness, "You should be grateful. She would probably be gone if it wasn't for your boyfriend" he said, the last word causing me to blush.

As the doctor went away, I glanced back at Ryu. He wasn't snoring anymore, but he had some drool at the corner of his mouth. I smiled softly, then sat down next to him and grabbed his hand.

"When you wake up, I'll have to tell you you're my boyfriend now" I whispered.
