Chapter Three

Amidst all of Heather's thoughts, and the fact that she was running, she accidentally bumped into something and fell backwards. "Are you okay?" The male wolf asked her, seemingly concerned.

"Yeah, peachy." Heather replied, getting up and shaking her head. "Where did you come from anyway?"

"My name is Wess. I came from the Shadow-claw pack, which has now been taken over by the Night Ninjas."

"Wait-really?!? What about Xavier and Maki?!"Heather asked, completely taken aback.

Wess looked sadly at Heather before turning away. "They both died from the grief of losing both of their pups in one day... Why do you ask? Did you know Xavier or Maki?"

Heather whimpered before answering. "Yes, Maki was my daughter."

When Heather and Wess had reached the cave, it was late morning. "Heather, why are you back so early? Who is this?" Sharp asked upon seeing them.

"Hi, Sharp. This is Wess. You see, he's from their pack and this is what he told me..." Heather explained, and after a few moments, she had finished.

"That's surprising." Sharp answered, looking stunned.

"Yes, I agree, Sharp, but we must find a good amount of back up and quick." Heather said.

"I think it would be best if we had a smaller, more agile team." Wess suggested.

"What about us?" Taka asked as he walked out of the cave with Breeze and Coal in tow.

Heather looked worried for a moment before sighing. "I don't like it, but it is the more convenient option at this point."

"What would the less convenient option be?" Sharp asked curiously.

"Going to ask Riko and Leasha for help." Heather answered.

"In that case, like Heather said, option one sounds better, as it would be one less day of travel" Sharp stated.

Having made their decision, Sharp and Heather nodded their heads to Taka, Coal, and Breeze, who cheered in return.

"Let's go." Sharp said, taking up the lead with Wess. Taka, Coal, and Breeze followed suit with Heather taking up the rear of the 6-wolf group.

Arriving just outside the camp about half a day later, Wess took the group to a tunnel opening.

"Why are we stopping here? It's almost nighttime, so it should be safe to ambush them." Coal inquired.

Wess shook his head slowly before explaining. "The Night Ninjas are much too strong for us to do that. What we need to do is use these tunnels to take them out. You see, they don't know a thing about these old tunnels. Rather than ambushing them all out, I figured that we could go straight into the leader's den."

"The leader's den? Right now?" Taka asked.

"No, it makes sense." Sharp explained to Taka. "Think about it, what are the Night Ninjas going to do if they see their leader dead before the battle has begun?"

"Exactly." Wess agreed, relieved that Sharp had explained everything.

"Then, what are we waiting for?" Heather asked.

Before muttering something that sounded like 'impatient she-wolf', Wess darted into the tunnel entrance. He was followed closely by Coal, then Breeze, then Taka. Heather took one last look behind her before looking back at the tunnel entrance with uncertainty. 'Here goes nothing.' Heather thought to herself before sprinting through the dark abyss.
