One thing that I want to share with everyone because it bugged me (still does a bit) and I want to share in case anyone might have the same problem.
The title says representation, but I think it's a little more than that. Nowadays, we're seeing more and more characters that are LGBT+ and are poc. One thing that I find myself running into when I write is how my characters are going to be thought of by the readers. Their names, personalities, appearances, everything needs to be perfect. What I think really needs to happen, is they just need to be them. I've always found that eventually, the character will a lot of times flesh themselves out.
If multiple people in your story happen to be queer, that's cool and normal. If they're straight, that's also cool 'cause that's normal as well.
If some characters or poc or they're not, it's fine.
What I'm trying to say is, no matter what minority or majority is out there, your characters can belong to any which one and they'll still turn out great. Don't limit yourself or your story on what society may or may not find acceptable.
Also, don't feel the need to come out directly and tell the reader that a character is or isn't gay, trans, poc, has a disorder. If you make sure to keep the story good and sprinkle in detail (and your reader is paying attention), the reader will usually always get it.
