I hate you

there are times
that i hate you.
i hate the way you looked at me
with eyes like city lights
glowing on wet pavement,
they're crinkled at the edges
like the pages
of my favorite book.
i've read it way too many times.

i hate the way you talked to me
with a voice so warm
like the crackling fires
that used to lull us to sleep
with you wrapped around me so tightly i thought i'd never breathe again.
i didn't want to.

i hate the way you held me
with arms like safety
and your heartbeat against my cheek like home.

i hate your indent on the left side of the mattress.
my fingers still search for it every night before i go to sleep
and every morning as i wake up.
i hate the scars your lips left
on my skin.
i see them every time i look in the mirror
i know no one can see them but me.

i hate the way you loved me
until you just couldn't anymore.
i hate that those things are gone now.
i hate that i still dream they might come back.
