An ode to my childhood

my childhood was orange
like crunching autumn leaves
and slimy pumpkin seeds.
it was plastic cups
lined on rain-slicked sidewalks;
pudgy little fingers
smearing shapes in frosted glass.
it was painful laughter
and crackling thunderstorms
huddled in warm garages;
clunky hot chocolate mugs
and Breakfast at Tiffany's on VHS.

my childhood was yellow
like sour lemonade stands
in sticky heat;
muddy slip-n-slides
and tie-dye bikinis.
it was melted Otter Pop wrappers
sweet, goopy blackberries
and next-door neighbors.
American Pie blasting on a dusty boom box
and dancing barefoot
on sunbaked asphalt.
it was rainbow water balloon fights
on itchy grass
and hide and seek in the dark.

my childhood was you.
hopscotch
and dimpled bubblegum cheeks;
bouncing yellow pigtails
excessive cuddling
and gap-toothed grins.
my childhood
would be nothing
without you in it.
