I stand in line at the homeless shelter waiting to be served my meal. After a few minutes I get to the front on the line and collect a plastic bowl filled with hot steaming soup. As I turn away from the people serving I accidentally bump into the person behind me in the line. I start to apologise before I realise who it is.
"Brandon?" I ask, already knowing that it's him. We used to be friends in elementary school before we kinda drifted apart. "What are you doing here?"
"Um, getting soup," he says in a 'isn't it obvious' kind of voice. He goes to say something else when the person behind him jabs him in the back, indicating that they are getting sick of waiting. "One sec," he says before turning and getting his meal. After doing so, we walk over to a vacant bench and sit down side by side.
"I know you're getting soup stupid. I mean how did you end up here? Like, are you living on the streets or what?" I ask as we sit down.
"I should be asking you the same thing!" He replies. "But um, yeah I've been living in the streets for over a year now." My jaw drops and my eyes widen as he says that.
"Seriously? Sorry, I had no idea..." I reply sympathetically.
"What about you? You went really of the rails for a while if you don't mind me saying. How'd you end up here?"
"I had a fight with my parents about everything that's happened this year and ran away a few nights ago" I explain to him.
We chat for a while and finish our soup, before saying our goodbyes and going our separate ways. I find a place to sleep and make myself as comfortable as possible given the circumstances. My eyes slowly close and I fall asleep as I end another long day.
