Chapter 2
"Who can tell me the answer? Oliver?"
"What?" I was completely out of it. I slurred as I spoke and I sounded kind of drunk and tired. It was 6th period english. I'd gotten a bit 'carried away' at lunch and it had really fucked with my head. I had a massive headache and my hands were shaking a bit despite the fact that I wasn't cold in the slightest. I had payed no attention what-so-ever to anything going on in class, and now Mr Norgreen had said my name; probably asking me a question. A few people giggled quietly at my response, others just ignored it or rolled their eyes. I had a reputation for being the emo, druggie, hopeless case, quite kid, weirdo .. yeah you get the message. Basically, I didn't talk to anyone so they didn't talk to me.
"I said, Mr Maysley, what was the significance of the shoe in the water in chapter 4?" I stared at him in complete confusion. Chapter 4? I thought, Chapter 4 of what?? Mr Norgreen spoke again: "Mr Maysley have you even read the book?"
"Wait, what book?" I asked, still having no idea what was going on. Again some people laughed, but I didn't even care. Mr Norgreen was calling me by my last name so he must have been pissed off.
"You were told to read it 2 weeks ago Mr Maysley. Is it really too hard for you to follow such a simple instruction?"
"I honestly don't know what you're talking about. I never remember being told to read anything!" I raised my voice as I said this. God, I am so out of it. My head is pounding, and Mr Norgreen is being a total jerk! Now his just trying to embarrass me and prove that he's better than me to make me feel like shit. That won't work though, I don't get embarrassed I just get angry.
"Mr Maysley, I believe I made myself quite plain when I explained the work you were to do. I'm not going to repeat myself just because you weren't paying attention. Now answer my question."
"I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE FUCKING TALKING ABOUT!! WHAT BLOODY BOOK! HOW THE FUCK AM I MEANT TO ANSWER YOU'RE STUPID QUESTION IF I HAVEN'T EVEN READ THE DARN THING?!?!" Shit, what have I just done? Mr Norgreen looks like I just slapped him, well I guess I did just swear and shout at him in the middle of class. The stupid giggly girls in the corner now looked like I had just murdered someone.
"Mr Maysley I'm going to have to ask you to go to the principal's office. That was totally inappropriate and- "
"FUCK THIS SHIT I'M OUT" I grabbed my books and left the classroom, slamming the door behind me. I headed to my locker, got my bag and hastily shoved my books and razor blade into it. I closed it forefully and it made a loud bang. As I walked through the corridor to the front doors of the school I saw Linda Chaplin at her locker with the bag. She must have been leaving, which was weird since we only have 20 minutes of school left. I was still fuming when I walked out the doors of the school and I tripped on a jumper someone had left on the ground.
Linda rushed up behind me. "Are you okay Oliver?" I turned around to face her and saw that her eyes were red and puffy, like she'd been crying.
"um, yeah I'm fine thanks," Linda was one of the few people at school I willingly spoke to. She was one of those people that you couldn't really catergorize: she wasn't a popular bitchy girl, or a nerdy/geeky girl, she certainly wasn't a druggie/emo like me, nor was she an annoying outspoken person, or a quite one, a teacher's pet type, definitely not one of the slutty girls who'll hook up with anyone. She was just... nice. She was always really genuine and never judged me on anything I did.
"But are you okay? What's the matter?" I asked her. She seemed slightly caught of guard by my question, but she smiled a little even though it was a sad smile.
