He dried his tears and looked at his mother.
"How is it that you know so well about what I'm going through?"
"Dean, I've only truly loved two men in my life, your father and someone else. His name was Matt and well we were in love like you and Lucky were.
"You probably know where this is going. The same thing that happened to you happened to me, 'cept the roles are reversed."
. Dean sat still in his seat and intently listened to what his mother was saying. He didn't know his mother had anyone before his father. She was always so reserved and while her other friends would complain about their partners to her, she never seemed reminiscent of her ex-partners.
"We were at a party one night, Matt was drunk that night and I wanted to drive home but he refused and seemed stable to drive. But I was wrong. Dean we were in an accident. Matt ended up in a coma and after two years his parents couldn't take it that they were keeping him alive when his time had expired.
"I began blaming myself for what had happened and replayed that night with so many different outcomes. If I had said I wanted the drive and didn't let him get his way."If I wasn't as casual about him drinking that much that night. I couldn't Dean. Much like you, I locked everyone out and soon I became suicidal."
She let out a breath and toyed with the handle of the cup not looking at him.
"Dean, don't do what I did. I'm sure you know that Lucky wouldn't want you to be this way. I'm sure if she was here right now, she'd let you know that she forgave you and everyone makes mistakes."
She was right. As all mothers were. He had been holding onto that day. He had replayed that night in his mind coming up with ways in which she wouldn't have died though he knew that the past was in the past and he couldn't change it as much as he wanted to.
