Chapter Two
"Do you know what this means!?" I screamed. "My dad hadn't left me! He loves me!" I said. Jax grabbed my hand causing me to look at him.
"Phee, I-I don't know. It's just ..." Jax started.
"Jax, you have never doubted me before so don't now." I said.
"Okay then. We have two paintings out of five. So that means we need three more." Jax said. I was so tempted to say something like you can do math! but I didn't.
"Well I'm grounded so we're gonna have to sneak out." I said. Jax looked at me as if I was someone else. I rolled my eyes and grabbed a backpack, packing it with clothes and money that I've been saving up. I have a feeling that we are going to be gone for a while. Jax didn't question me as I packed some of his clothes that I have here.
"We can't take my car. It's in the shop." Jax said. I nodded. "I'm going to climb out the window first and catch you if you fall." Jax said. He climbed out. But I remembered my painting I had. I put them in the backpack.
"Catch!" I whisper yelled at Jax throwing the book bag down. Then I climbed down. Jax grabbed me when I was in reach putting me on the ground.
We ran to the nearest bus stop. Waiting for the next bus. "We are so lucky that we brought our bus passes." Jax said. Finally the bus came and we got on. Luckily no one we knew was on but that didn't mean nothing. Jax and I stayed close to the back trying to be invisible. "Phoenix what if it's just something your mom did. You know to make you think of your father as a good guy."
"That's the thing, Jax. My mom hates my father. She would do anything to make me forget him. Why would she do this?" I said. Jax nodded.
"What time is it?" Jax asked. I pulled out my phone and showed him. "Six-thirty-five." I had no texts or calls from anyone. No one knew yet.
"So where are we going?" Jax asked.
"Well I'm not sure but I think we should go to the mall. You know with that lady." Jax laughed silently. "What?"
"Just thinking." He said. I leaned my head against his shoulder. As I was welcoming the darkness I think I heard him say, "I'll always follow you anywhere." Before falling asleep.
"Wake up, Phee." Jax whispered. I woke up to him pulling me off the bus. In front was the mall. We had fifteen minutes before it closed. Jax and I ran through the doors. Running past the cake store. Past the food court. Past Bath and Body Works. Until finally we were in front of the store. We walked in and found the lady in the back of the store fixing the paintings.
"Ah, I knew you would be back Phoenix." She said. I gasped. How did she know my name? "Follow me." she said. Jax and I found ourselves in the storage room of the shop. "I'm sure you're wondering what's going on."
"yeah like how did you know Phee's name?" Jax asked.
"All in good time. Now Phoenix you must know that I knew your father. He was a great man. He told me that in fifteen years or so you will come of age. So he gave me the second piece to the painting."
She knew my father? "So you know where the others are?" Jax asked.
"No I do not. That is Phoenix's mission to find them. Not mine. But I do have what will help you find them. Your father said you would know." She handed me a book. Titled: The Lost Kingdom of Athait.
"Athait?" Both Jax and I asked at the same time sharing an unsure glance.
"Yes, Athait. It will make since in due time. But you must find all of the paintings." She said. "Here, you will need these." She added as an afterthought handing us car keys. "It is not the best ride but it will get you around." She told us the exact area where she parked. "Goodbye Phoenix and Jax." She said ushering us out of the store.
"Jax, are we really doing this?" I asked.
"Only if you want to Phee." Jax said. When we got outside, we followed the directions she gave us. He unlocked the car and climbed in. I got in the passenger side.
"Okay I'm ready to go." I said. I pulled out the book and started to read.
"You're really reading the book?" Jax asked.
"Yep. If my dad went to the trouble of the paintings then I won't put it past him." I said. He nodded watching the road.
Athait is a kingdom lost to time. The kingdom has been removed from every map in the world. After the Royal King's son disappeared without a trace the kingdom went down in flames. It is said that the son, Vladimir, had left because of a woman. A woman he married behind his mothers and fathers wishes. It is said he had a son who will take back the kingdom.
In the front of the book was a map. It had a few markers on it. Like it was intentionally marked. The map oddly looked like the United States ...
"Jax, can we pull over at the next rest stop, please." I asked.
"Okay." He said. He looked at me then turned to the road. "So read anything important?" He asked.
"Yeah. Nothing important yet. But I'm only in the introduction." Jax nodded. I looked at my phone. Nothing. No one has noticed yet. "Jax? Have you gotten any calls or texts yet?" I asked.
"No I didn't get anything." I nodded. Of course. No one missed me. No one really cares about me. Except my dad. We pulled into the rest stop. I got out closing the door behind me. Jax got out and locked the door after us. "What are we doing?" Jax asked.
"We are getting a U.S. map." I said. Jax helped me look through the pamphlet with all the maps until we found the right one. I pulled out the book and laid the map over the book map. It was almost a perfect match. The spots marked were in the same spots as New York, Washington D.C., and New Jersey.
"Jax, lets go. We have a lot of driving to do." I said.
"Okay I'll bait. What are we going?" Jax asked.
"New Jersey, Washington D.C., and New York." I said.
"What's important about that?" He asked.
"My Mom met my dad in New Jersey, I was born In Washington D.C.. I don't know about New York though." He nodded grabbing my hand pulling me toward the car.
"Want me to drive?" I asked.
"I'm fine." Jax said. He helped me in the back. I laid down getting some sleep so I could take over when Jax was sleepy.
"When you get sleepy you better tell me!" I warn him. He chuckles but nods his head.
