Chapter One
"Phoenix! Hurry up!" my little step-sister yelled. We were shopping for our step-dad. Well my step-dad, Aimee's dad. My mother was buying the cake so she sent me to go and get a gift for him with Aimee. She stopped in front of a display of a train collection. It wasn't a secret that Xavier loved trains. I looked at the price.
"$7 hundred dollars!" I gasped. No! We will have to find a much cheaper one. Aimee giggled and pranced around the shop looking for the right one. I was looking at a blue train when Aimee ran up behind me pointing to a red train collection for only one hundred dollars! I nodded and she grabbed it.
The checkout boy was doing more than checking out the collection. I rolled my eyes at his lame attempt to pick me up. Aimee wanted to hold it but I made her give it to me so she wouldn't break it.
As we were walking to the cake store we passed by a store with a beautiful painting. It was lovely with its careful strokes. It looked as if it went with my other painting my father left me when I was baby ... "Phoenix! Ah there you are. I was wondering where you went off to." Jax, my best friend said. I invited him to the surprise party for Xavier. He was looking for a gift as well.
Aimee giggled, "hey Jax!" Aimee likes Jax.
"How's my favorite little eight year old." Jax said ruffling her hair. Jax turned to the painting I was looking at and smiled. "Excuse me but how much does this painting cost?" Jax asked. I whipped my head around. What is he doing?
"Sorry sir but it's not for sale." a petite woman answered.
I knew what he was about to do. "Jax don't-"
"Ma'am there is no such thing as not for sale." He smiled softly at me. "This painting is a vision of beauty and I wish to purchase it for someone."
She snorted. "It is not for sale young man. Please-" she paused looking at me before smiling like the Cheshire cat. "ah yes well ... Why not. This painting is only five dollars." I gasped. This is only five dollars! What?
"Well than here you go." Jax paid and she handed him the painting in a bag. Aimee started to giggle.
I think Aimee thinks it's for her ...
Mom was waiting in the car for us. She texted me tell us to just come to the car. Jax, Aimee and I got in the backseat. "So what did you get for your dad?" mom asked. I rolled my eyes. Jax grabbed my hand and squeezed it reassuring me.
"We got daddy a train set in his favorite color!" Aimee answered. "Jax got daddy something too!" Aimee added.
"Jax, honey, you didn't have to do that." mom told him.
"Of course I did. It's his party. I'm not going to show up without a present." Jax answered. There was a new silence in the car. "So where is Mr. Gray? Out golfing?" Jax asked. Mom nodded smiling. I sighed.
Jax held my hand and drew little circles on it while I rested my head on his shoulder. Slowly I drifted off to sleep.
I woke up in a pair of arms. Jax. He smiled down at me. "You need to get ready." He told me. I nodded as he put me down on my black bed. He went into my closet pulling out clothes. I hated all the outfit he was choosing. All of them were dresses or dressy clothes. I didn't want any of that. Finally he pulled out leggings and a sweater with my black converse. I smiled nodded with him groaning. I grabbed the outfit, kissing him on the cheek before going into the bathroom.
I changed quickly grabbing my straightener. "Jax! Please!" I begged. I taught Jax to straighten hair so he could do it for me. He rolled his eyes before motioning me to the bed. I sat on it as he brushed through my hair and straightening it like a pro.
