CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Upon our return home, we found Katy passed out in the lounge in front of the TV. We both laughed at her open mouth and the light snore escaping from it.
We put down the bags in the kitchen and started making food straight away. Alex’s mom would be here at seven and it was already quarter to six.
The hour passed too fast. Alex and I had prepared a lamb with some veggies and baked potatoes. While I was setting the kitchen counter, to make it look like a table, Alex woke up her cousin. I was busy looking for a nice wine when I heard the doorbell ring. Panic shot through me, causing my heartbeat to rise. Luckily for me I wasn’t a nervous sweater, but I did tend to giggle a lot even when no jokes were being made. I ended up just grabbing a bottle and putting it on the table. I met them halfway and introduced myself to her mother.
“I’m Erin Wright.” I shook her hand firmly.
“Robin Lacey.” She replied.
I wasn’t surprised by her mother’s beauty. She had long black hair, the same shape face as Alex, her eyes were a deep chocolate brown, and her figure was just as small and fragile as Alex’s was. I smiled; my nervousness was starting to seep through my calm and collected composure. We all took our seats, and as to indicate to her mom that I was the head of the house, I cut the lamb and placed a piece in everyone’s plate. I then sat back down and dished up some veggies, passing the bowls clockwise around the table. I did the same with the potatoes. When everyone had enough food in their plate I lifted up my knife and fork, ready to gobble down my food, so that I didn’t have to talk much. Just as I was about to put a carrot in my mouth her mother stopped me.
“Aren’t we gonna say grace?” She asked looking directly at me. I swear I could hear her say ‘that’s strike one’. I mentally sighed. It took all the concentration i had not to burts out laughing from my nerves.
I lifted up Robin's hand and took it in mine and then did the same with Alex. She reached over to take her cousin’s hand and then the cousin connected with Robin. When everyone’s hands were touching, I bowed my head.
“Thank You Lord for the food we are about to eat, and please bless those who are less fortunate. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Everyone lifted their heads and looked at me. I picked up my forked that still had my carrot attached from earlier and put it in my mouth. This time there were no interruptions. I chewed slowly, even more so than usual, scared that if I swallowed I will be attacked with questions.
“Where do you work?” Robin asked innocently. I knew that this would be the first question of many, so I braced myself.
“I don’t work yet; I’m aspiring to become a musician.” I answered honestly. I knew that if I lied I would get caught and that would ruin any chance Alex I might have. Only a small giggle escaped my lips.
“That’s nice I enjoy music.” Robin’s eyes were a bit sceptical. I took another bite of my veggies, but this time I chewed normally.
“If you don’t have a job yet, how do you pay for this lovely home?” I knew this question was bound to come up sometime and I also knew that what she was really asking was if I could take care of Alex if I didn’t get a salary.
“My parents are rich and they agreed to pay for everything until I get a record deal. Robin seemed pleased by this answer. My nerves were now starting to calm.
There were a couple of more questions from her throughout the dinner like how did Alex and I meet, when did realize that I liked girls. Nothing too hard for me to have lied about, like I thought I would have to. Alex’s mother and I got along fairly well, but I could see how uncomfortable it was for her every time I kissed Alex on the cheek, or every time I squeezed her hand, but I had to do it to show her how much I really loved her daughter. Sometimes Alex would say something and I would just gaze lovingly in her eyes, getting lost in them, like they were my sanctuary. I cut a nice piece of meat for myself to eat. I lifted it up but before I could place it in my mouth, I caught a smell of the spices that mixed in with the smell of the meat and I could feel the food I just ate, start to come up.
