CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Three weeks later!

‘Ring… Ring…’

I heard Alex’s phone ring in the background. But as always it goes straight to her voicemail after that. I still miss her very much and whoever said that with time it will become easier was a lair. The only thing that becomes easier is hiding the pain. Everyday away from her just made me miss her more. I would dream about her at night and wake up with a wet pillow every morning.

I walked into the lounge, after my killer gym session, and saw mother and father’s packed bags. I mentally shrieked out of joy on the inside. You don’t know how much you value you’re privacy until your parents decide to move in with you for a while.

I got a wonderful lingering smell coming from the kitchen and made my way toward it. My mother was making her famous lasagne dish with some mixed veggies and sweet potatoes on the side. I sat behind the counter and took a sip from my water bottle.

“You’re making my favourite.” I stated.

She just nodded her head. My father peeked his head passed his newspaper.

“And how did your first workout back in the gym go?” he asked, faking interest.

“It was tough.” I kept my reply short, knowing he really didn’t care.

"That's good to hear." He lifted his newspaper back to his face and kept on reading. I picked up my phone to see if I had received a message from Alex yet. This was just my way of torturing myself.

My mother set the table and we all gathered round. I couldn’t wait to get a taste of that lasagne. We said grace and we all started eating.

“So when are you going back to open mic nights?” My mother asked making conversation.

“I’m actually going tonight; Jesse said I could do three songs, because a music producer is coming to scout for new talent.” I smiled politely over to her. On the inside I was shouting for joy. I was so close to reaching my dreams.

“That’s nice dear.” She said.

“You know if you’d like your mother and I can stay another night and come watch you perform.” My father joined in on the conversation

“No!” I exclaimed a little too quickly.

“I mean, that would be great but I think your company is probably falling apart on that side.” It would be great if they could watch me but I just wanted my life to go back to the way it was.

“Nice save, kiddo, but we can take a hint.” My dad chuckled.

“Would you feel better if we came to you gig tonight and booked in to a hotel?” My mom suggested.

“That would be awesome!” I said snickering at them.

Maybe I will sing that new song I wrote about Alex, I thought as I finished my brunch.

It was about 17:30 when I decided to get up from the TV and get ready for Jesses. My mother and father as well as Terry and Abby would be meeting me there shortly, all to show their support. I decided not to play the song I had written for Alex because my wounds were still open, and I was afraid that I would cry on stage. I took a brush through my hair and let it hang loose to my shoulders, parted to the one side.

I quickly drove all the way towards Jesse’s. I got out the car and was bombarded with hugs from Terry and Abby.

“Long time no see, mate” Terry said doing an Australian accent.
