CHAPTER NINE
I awoke in unfamiliar place. All four walls were painted white. I suddenly felt like the walls were closing in on me. I closed my eyes quickly and re-opened them. The walls were standing still now. There was a blue curtain to my left, all crumbled up. There was a small TV mounted to the ceiling, playing an old black and white movie. At the end of the bed was a tray with food; on it were some mix veggies, a chicken breast and small plastic bowl of jelly placed on a plate in the tray. Seeing the food just made me realise how thirsty I was and how much my throat hurt. Just behind the tray, I could see two people; they looked much older than I did. I focused all of my attention on getting a better look at them. The lady had on a blue sweater, over a white top. Her features were similar to mine; the only difference is they were aged. She had wrinkles around her closed eyes and her makeup was plastered on thick.
“Mom?” I questioned in my mind. Next to her must have been my dad, but I wasn’t sure as his face was behind my mother’s shoulder.
I looked over to my left arm and saw Terry’s body hunched over. Her arms were folded over my bed. And her face was buried somewhere between them. I noticed that she was holding my hand. Just behind her was Abby, passed out on the chair, snoring ever so lightly.
I felt the sensation in my hand increase on the right hand side. I looked over to see Alex, looking at me with shocked eyes, who was now squeezing my hand instead of just holding it.
I could tell she had just woken up, because the sleep was still thick in her eyes. The pieces of the puzzle started to fit together, my friends and family were around me, everyone was sleeping uncomfortably, and there was a random tray of food near my bed. I look down at the white sheets on my bed; the blankets were also white like the walls but had red first aid crosses on them. I’m in the hospital, I finally realized.
I tried to smile at Alex but every part of my face hurt. It felt swollen and was probably bruised.
I got a flashback to what happened in the grocery store.
The bruise under Alex’s eyes seemed more than noticeable now. I wanted to ask her if she was alright, but my throat felt to dry and pain echoed in it like it was an empty house. I knew she could see the pain and concern in my eyes, because they now reflected in hers.
She stood up quietly and placed her soft pink lips on my forehead. I could barely feel the electricity traveling though my body, from the kiss, over the pain, that one simple touch of her lips caused. I cringed at first, then forced my lips to move into a smile. Once Alex saw the smile, her whole face brightened up.
She leaned in to whisper in my ear.
“I’m going to call the doctor.” She said, blowing her warm breathe down my neck. I closed my eyes and tried to savour the moment.
“Be quick!” I managed to say, turning my throat into a ball of fire.
Alex returned only moments later with an elderly but handsome doctor. He wasn’t much taller than she was, and he had very broad shoulders. His mousy brown hair was starting to turn grey and his brown, kind eyes were looking deeply at me in concern.
“How are you feeling?” he asked softly trying not to wake the other people in the room.
“I’m okay.” I say feeling like I just swallowed a thousand knives. I moved my hand as quickly as I can and grab my throat, not that it would stop the burning, it was more of a habit I had; I would always grab on to a part of my body if it was in pain. Right now my whole body was in pain, so I guess I just focused on the parts that were paining more than others.
Alex saw this action and immediately handed me a glass of water.
“I’m doctor Steyn.” The doctor continued as I took a sip of water, drenching the fire that was in my throat.
