I waited at a table with Zay and Smackle on one side, Riley and her boyfriend on the other. Maya's friend kept interrogating me about why we stopped talking. I overall felt uncomfortable.
I sighed then got an idea. Maybe Riley would want to talk to me.
"Riles can we talk?" I asked staring at her hopefully. She stared into my eye's before nodding and standing up. She kissed her boyfriend on the cheek before walking over to the back of the room, with me trailing behind her.
"What's wrong?" She asked placing her hand on my arm. She was trying to fix all of my problems before she even knew what they were, just like Riley used to do. Even though she looked different and had matured, she was still the same old Riley.
"I just felt awkward and needed an escape. Sorry about stealing you away from your boyfriend." I sighed running my hand through my hair.
"No. Stop. Stefan will be fine. Talk to me." She cared so much about me after all this time.
"I'm in love with her." I stated looking everywhere except in her eyes.
"I know." I looked up in shock.
"How?" I choked out still processing what she had said.
"Lucas you have been in love with her since that day on the subway 15 years ago. Back then I was too obsessed by the idea of you to notice. I also know that you only chose me at the ski lodge because she told you to. Well now it's my turn. Go find Maya, and tell her you love her." Riley left me stunned. She was right. A part of me always knew Maya was my soulmate.
"I will." I went back to the table but Maya still wasn't back. "Is Maya still outside with Farkle? I need to talk to her." Maya's friend smirked at me but I didn't care.
"Dani!" The most beautiful voice in the world called out. I watched as Dani walked away and I waited anxiously for Maya to return.
"Hey Ranger Rick." The nickname immediately put a smile on my face. "You wanted to talk to me?"
"Yeah. I've been thinking about you a lot lately." I blurted out, probably not sounding as smooth as I would have liked. I was shaking with fear facing this small blonde. She did not notice my panic so I hoped it was not surfacing like I thought.
"Oh really? And what has been going on in your little Texan mind?" She asked smirking her familiar Maya smirk. I remembered all those times in middle school or high school when that smirk was plastered on her face. Whenever she was about to hahurr in my face. Or that time she wrote a song about me. It started as just Maya then the entire class joined in. Including me. The way her face lit up as she made fun of me was too adorable not to encourage.
"Not really my mind...my heart." I gently took her hand in mind and placed it over the left side of my chest. Her expression reminded me of the time when I grabbed her face at the campfire, desperately wanting to kiss her. I still had no idea why I didn't but it was definitely one of the biggest mistakes I made. Up there with choosing Riley at the Ski lodge. Riley would always be my first girlfriend and I don't regret that, but sometimes I wonder how things would have changed if I had chosen Maya. Or if I had kissed her.
Maybe Maya and I would be married by now with our first kid and a second on the way. Farkle wouldn't have missed his chance with Riley and they would be together. Smackle and Zay would have realized they belonged with each other sooner. And most of all, the six of us would have remained friends.
As I stared into Maya's eyes, I noticed how like the night back in Texas she was startled.
"Lucas...what are you saying?" I suddenly got nervous. Why would a girl as perfect as her want someone as broken as me? I got a sinking feeling that she didn't feel the same way. But it was too late to go back now.
"I love you."
