I stepped out of my cab, having just arrived at the place I would be calling home for the next four years of my life. I heaved my suitcases out of the trunk and paid the driver before stepping foot onto the enormous campus. My chest heaved in fear and excitement at thought of starting this new chapter in my life. I dragged my bags toward the building I was only hoping was my dorm. Luckily, I was right. After receiving my room number and key, I hauled my bags to the tenth floor and down the hall to my room. Praying that my roommate had not arrived before me, I flung open the door, only to see a slim Asian girl arranging things on her desk. She turned to me and her face brightened in excitement,
"Hi! You must me Molly. I'm Mari, Mari Takahasi!" she greeted with a slight Japanese accent and held out her hand. I shook it and beamed back at her,
"It's nice to finally meet you Mari! I'm really looking forward to this semester" I replied. She nodded,
"Me too! Didja need help with your bags?" she asked, pointing to the one I had set on the floor to shake her hand. I shook my head,
"I got it, thanks though" I replied politely as I lifted my bag and placed it and the other one I was holding on my bed. I began unpacking as Mari went back to arranging things on her desk, then moving to make her bed. I piped up after a few minutes of silence,
"So is English your second language? I was curious cause I could hear an accent when we were talking earlier".
"It is! I moved here when I was 6 but I guess I still kept a tiny bit of the accent since I speak Japanese fluently" she replied.
"That's so cool that you speak two languages fluently!" I said genuinely. Mari smiled at me in response. We suddenly heard a knock at our door and I opened it to reveal who I could only assume was our dorm advisor. He was a tall African-American man that didn't look more than a year or two older than me and Mari, with a Flash eyepatch covering his left eye,
"Hi, I'm Flitz, your dorm advisor" he said, shaking my hand.
"Flitz?" I heard Mari question from behind me.
"It's a nickname, but no one calls me by my real name, so I just go by Flitz" he explained in response, "anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know that there's a freshman party tonight and all incoming freshman are invited. If you have any more questions my dorm is down the hall or you can just call". We both chirped a 'thanks' to Flitz as he left.
"So are you gonna go to the party?" I asked Mari once we were both settled. She shook her head,
"I need to read ahead so I'm prepared for class on Monday since I have ballet practice on weekends" she responded with a determined look on her face. I sighed
"I don't feel like going either. I'd feel weird if I didn't know at least one person" I said, giving her a pointed look. She didn't look the least bit guilty, and instead sat down at her desk and pulled an enormous textbook from her backpack. I checked my watch. It was almost 6:00, so I decided to head downstairs to grab some food. I asked Mari if she wanted anything before I left. She murmured a barely audible 'no' and with that I closed the door behind me.
I traipsed through the cafeteria, trying to find something that looked edible. I finally stumbled upon a Noodles and Co., so I stuck with that. I made a beeline for the small stand and a few minutes later I was walking away with my personal favorite: macaroni and cheese with Parmesan chicken. I wandered the cafeteria looking for a place to sit. I zoned out for a split second and accidentally knocked into someone, spilling my drink all over their shirt. My eyes widened in shock,
"I am SO sorry!" I squealed, not knowing what else to do.
'Good job, Molly. You've only been here a few hours and you've already spilled soda on the second person you've met!'. The boy that I had spilled my drink on groaned in annoyance but didn't look too angry otherwise. I looked up at him apologetically. He had bright blue eyes and straight brown hair that was in the shape of a bowl. His friend that he had been walking with looked like he was ready to punch me and was giving me a look that said, 'how dare you spill soda on my friends shirt, you're gonna pay for that!'. He had straight dark brown hair that covered his forehead and part of the right side of his face and brown eyes. They both looked to be about my age,
"I'm sorry! I must not have been looking where I was going!!" I said to the blue eyed boy,
"No worries, it's just soda, it'll come out. Do you want me to buy you another one?" he asked. I was stunned at his response, considering his friend looked extremely pissed off at me,
"Ian, she was obviously too stupid to watch where she was going, why would you buy her another soda?" he growled, still keeping his glare focused on me. The blue eyed boy, whose name must have been Ian, brushed the boys statement off and looked back at me,
"Sorry about him, he's just my best friend so he's...protective" he said apologetically, "I'm Ian, by the way, and this is Anthony" he gestured to his friend. Something about them seemed familiar to me, but I couldn't put my finger on what.
"I'm Molly. Sorry again, it's my first day here and I'm just trying to get my bearings". Ian nodded in understanding and Anthony's expression softened a little bit.
"We moved in early but it's our first year too" Ian responded. He was about to speak up when I stopped him,
"Before we continue this conversation, did you maybe want to change out of that shirt? Just a suggestion" I stated, pointing at his still damp shirt. Ian glanced down at his shirt then back up at me,
"Yeah that's probably a good idea" he replied, "Are you going to the incoming freshman party tonight?" he asked. I quickly shook my head,
"Not my kind of thing" I replied. Ian looked disappointed but Anthony didn't seen to care, he had taken out his phone and was playing Angry Birds, completely zoned out of our conversation.
"Well maybe we'll see you around. What floor are you on?" Ian asked.
"Ten"
"No way! Us too!" he said excitedly.
"I'll walk up with you guys, then" I replied. We chatted aimlessly in the elevator ride up and parted ways after exchanging room numbers when we got to our floor.
"I'm back" I said to Mari as soon as I got in our room. Her nose was still in her textbook, eyes scanning the page as she jotted down messy notes. She didn't even respond. I situated myself on my bed with my now cold food, popped in my headphones, and prepared for a relaxing first night at college.(A/N) Woo first chapter!! I've had this idea in my head for a while and I'm glad I finally wrote it out. I was originally going to write (y/n) instead of my own name but decided to leave it as is. I'm sorry!! I promise the next few chapters will get more interesting with a few more familiar faces to come! Hope you'll stick around! -Molly
