'Miss Gregario is a regular cliënt at the library.' Charlotte's honeysweet voice whispered into my ear.
We were both watching the elderly lady as she carefully picked books from the shelves. Her eyes scanned the back of every book fast, before she put them back into their place.
'She seems nice.' I smiled at her, our eyes connected for a second but not for too long. If they saw the way we looked at each other, it could possibly give away everything.
'She is,' Charlotte flipped through the pages of the book she had been holding, 'but you can't trust anybody in here. They will kill you before you can even say Mississippi.'
'Mississippi, seriously?' I had to hold back a laughter. Charlotte playfully slapped my arm, she hated it when I laughed with the things she said.
'I can't help it that I speak before I think.' She had once told me in a conversation we had months ago. I liked to remind her of that every now and then.
'Sweetheart,' Miss Gregario's voice sounded nothing like the voice of an elderly, still she looked as she had seen more than anybody else on in this world, 'could you help me pick a book?'
'I would love to,' the interupting by Miss Gregario made an end to our conversation.
I walked towards the back of library, with my head full of thoughts. I wasn't sure what to think about my conversation with Charlotte.
I knew that I couldn't, or shouldn't, trust anybody in this building. But did that also mean that I couldn't trust Mary? Or Felix?
Could I trust Charlotte? What if being here, alone without me by her side, changed her mind? What if the vampires changed her mind? In the end, would she still protect me?
'Don't mind me, I'm just watching the show.' Charlotte let go of my waist and took a step back, but not before kissing me softly on my right cheek.
'Pervert.' She muttered at the new male figure who had entered the room.
'Aw, that hurts Charlotte.' He chuckled whilst pushing himself away from the wall, and walking towards the refrigerator in the corner of the room.
'It should hurt even more than you're pretending, Thomas.'
Whenever Charlotte and Thomas entered the same room, a tensed atmosphere entered together with them.
Thomas shrugged and finally decided it would be better to ignore the other woman, focussing his eyes on me now.
'The boss is looking for you, Evelyn. He didn't say why, but he said it was urgent.'
Before I could say anything, Charlotte asked if she should come with me. I knew she always wanted to protect me, but the fact he only asked for me probably meant something.
'No, I'll go alone.' I smiled softly, taking her hands in mine and kissing her softly on the lips.
She nodded in agreement, but I could see it in her eyes that she didn't like me going alone.
The rest of the day I avoided Charlotte in every possible way.
I knew that we had to take advantage of the time we had together, but somehow I didn't feel like talking.
Maybe tomorrow we could discuss the situation, but for now I wanted to go back to my room and sleep.
'Felix will be here soon,' Charlotte looked up at the sound of my voice. She had been organizing the books on the desk for the last hour.
