Emily woke up to a dimly lit room. Worried she'd been captured again, she tried to stand up but it made her head spin so fast she nearly fainted by standing up. However, something grabbed her gently and sat her back down.
"Sit down." A rough, yet somehow smooth at the same time, voice spoke. "Your brain was without oxygen for awhile so it'll take time for your system to reboot."
"System?" She tried to speak but for some reason it made her head ache like crazy.
"If you're anything like me." He spoke again, he sat down in a chair that was next to what she now realized was a bed. "You don't have a mind or a body; you have a system." He leaned back in the chair, wincing as he did so, holding his right arm.
"You're arm..." she sat with her back against the headboard of the bed.
"It's fine." He shifted slightly. A hint of something glinted in his eye. "I'm more worried about you."
"Why?" She squinted, trying to figure out who was in front of her. "....You."
That's when it came crashing back to her. The hellicarrier crashing into the water. Steve trying to get Bucky to remember him, and it working at the moment the floor gave out sending Steve plummeting to the water.
"He's safe." If that's what you're wondering. "I made sure of it."
"How do I know you're not lying to me?" Emily winced as he learned forward so he was closer to her.
"See for yourself." He took her hands and brought them to his temples. "I wouldn't lie to you." He said after he was done showing her the memory.
"You pulled him out of the water, why?" She asked, they both pulled away from each other.
"I don't know."
"I think you do."
"I don't." He growled, getting up from the chair so quickly it nearly got knocked over.
"So what am I?" She followed him with her eyes. "Your hostage?"
"No, I just figured you'd rather live than drown." He said as he walked out the door, closing it behind him, signaling the end of the conversation.
She must've fallen asleep because the next thing she knew it was a little darker in the room. She got up from the bed and walked to the door she saw him walk through. She looked around to get a better grasp of her surroundings.
It seemed as though they were in an abandoned house somewhere in a wooded area. Completely hidden from the outside world and under the radar of both S.H.I.E.L.D. AND H.Y.D.R.A..
"Get a good look around?" Bucky asked from behind her, making her jump.
"It's cozy." She laughed humorlessly.
"It'll do for now." He moved around her and lit a candle to get more light in the room. "We can't stay here for long. We gotta keep moving."
"We?"
"You're full of questions." He chuckled.
"Well excuse me for trying to price things together."
"Get in line, doll." He frowned slightly. She noticed he was still clutching his right arm.
"That's not going to heal on its own of you don't reset it." She pointed to his arm. "May I?" She walked over to him and hovered her hands over his arm. He nodded hesitantly. She took a deep breath before quickly resetting it; he barely even flinched.
"Thank you." He half smiled.
"You're welcome." She nodded. They just stood across from each other for what seemed like hours before she spoke again. "Do you... remember me?"
"Sort of..." he looked down at his feet. "It's more like I remember the idea of you." He moved a little closer. "But I do know I don't want to be away from you anymore."
"You always did know how to make a girl feel special." She pulled him into an embrace. He wrapped his arm around her waist, holding her tight and burrowed his face in the crook of her neck. She stroked his hair, and just held him for a while until they felt like it was enough. "Is there any food here? We probably should eat something."
"There's some pasta in the kitchen." He pointed to the kitchen with his thumb. "I think the stove top still works."
They both walked into the kitchen. Emily found a pot and filled it up with water, while Bucky tested the stove. It took a few tries to get the fire to start but he managed and got the pot onto the stove to make the pasta."You know what I just realized?" Emily smiled softly.
"Hmm?" He looked away from the pot toward her.
"This is our first date."
"Well in that case." He smirked, something that seemed so foreign to him. "Might as well make the best out of it." He smiled pulling out a chair for her. "Sorry it took so long." He joked, another thing that seemed odd for him to do."Why thank you." She chuckled, sitting in the chair. "It was worth the wait." She smiled. "Do you remember the night we went dancing?" She watched him as he moved to the stove to put the pasta in the water.
"Barely..." He mumbled. "Can you describe it to me?" He stirred the pot a little before sitting in a chair next to her.
"I'll try my best." She smiled warmly, leaning back slightly in her chair a little bit. "Well, it was the night before we left with Steve to find Zola." She began, even though her memories weren't the most reliable either, she gathered together what she could. "We found a local joint that people went to, to dance and just overall have a good time."
"Did I step on your feet at all?" Bucky interjected.
"No, you were the perfect partner." She smiled gently, putting her hand over his left hand. He flinched slightly but didn't move his hand away. "Anyway. We ended up staying there until they closed and had to kick us out." She laughed a little. "So we just walked around the city, holding hands." She bit her lip in thought. "Looking like a pair of lovesick teenagers, even though our time together was short, it seemed as though we were making the best of it."
"...Emily." His voice was barely above a whisper. "I'm sorry our time together was cut short."
"It's not your fault, Buck." Emily's eyes began to water, she knew exactly whose fault it was. It was hers. "I should be the one to apologize." Bucky's face scrunched up in a confused look. "It's my fault that you got captured." Emily felt her eyes water a little. "The reason I kept popping up where you were, was because HYDRA told me to."
"What?" Bucky's face went from confused to hurt. "You lied to me?"
"No, Bucky." She whispered. "Hydra did what they do best and manipulated me, like they did to you-."
"But you let them do those things to me..." Bucky interrupted, his voice growing angry. "You knew this was going to happen."
"No." Emily began to panic. "No, I had no idea this is what they were going to do." Emily moved her hands to his cheeks but he moved them away.
"Don't touch me!" He yelled, getting up from his chair and began to walk away from her.
"Bucky, please." Emily followed him to the other room.
"So everything was a lie?" He asked, turning on his heel. "That's so typical. Just when I think I could trust someone. Especially someone I thought I could trust." He hissed.
"But you can trust me, Bucky." A single tear rolled down her cheek. "Now that we're together and HYDRA can't get to us..."
"How do I know you're not just saying that?" Bucky asked, tears started forming in his eyes too. "How do I know that you're not just going to turn around and lie to me again?"
"Because I love you!" Emily yelled at him. "And yes I made mistakes, but you made some too." She went off. "I'm trying my best to fix it, but I can't if you won't let me."
"You love me?" Bucky huffed after a few minutes of silence.
"Yes, I do." Emily wiped the tears from his face after wiping hers. "I didn't even know I could love anything until I met you." She whispered. "I'm sorry, and I won't blame you if walk out that do-." She was interrupted by Bucky pulling her face toward his and kissing her.
"It may take a while for my trust in you to build again." Bucky began after breaking the kiss. "But I understand that what you did, you didn't have full control over." He moved her hair out of her face. "And I love you too." He smiled, stroking her cheek with his thumb.
