18: Just Best Friends

Selena quickly rushed inside the condo, into the living room unable to register what had just happened an hour ago.

"Sel! Wait!", Max followed after her.

"You guys are back!", Nate shot up from the couch. He quickly walked towards Selena and grabbed her in his arms, "Shit! You are soaked Sel, Let's go get changed", He led her to his room and slowly shut the door behind him.

Max stood in his place watching as she left, 'Shit! What the fuck did I just do!?' 

Selena pushed Nate away as she shut the door to the bathroom. She got inside the shower and let the water rain on her. She slid down the wall and sat on the floor crying.

Nate walked out the room and looked angry.

"Why the hell is she drenched?", Nate questioned Max.

"I... Is she okay?", Max fumbled but was too worried about her to answer back straight to Nate.

"She is fine. I am gonna go get some cold and Flu tablets. She hasn't stopped sneezing. Do me a favour and just check up on her if I am late.", Nate grabbed the keys from the counter and stomped out.

For the next 20 odd minutes, Max paced outside Selena's room until he couldn't hold himself. He stomped inside the room and stood in front of the bathroom door.

"Sel..", He called out. 

She didn't respond, "Sel, I am coming in!", He reached for the knob and she suddenly opened the door , standing inches away from Max, the body almost touching each other.

"Where is Nate?", She looked around.

"He went to the pharmacy. Are you okay?", He put his hand on her shoulder and she brushed him off.

"I am fine", She looked in his eyes searching for answers on what had happened between them.

"I am really sorry", Max apologised.

Selena smiled, a smile Max hadn't seen in a while, "Max can you stop saying sorry every few seconds. I should be apologising to you. I let my issues get in the way. I should have thought about this more clearly. Everything looked simple but I guess now it's even more complicated", She was referring back to earlier.

"Don't worry about that. Keep it our little secret", He brushed a strand off hair behind her ear.

"What secret? Are you too back together?", Nate entered the room with a bag full of medicines.

Max's hand was on Selena's shoulders and another on her cheeks. The distance between the both was creating intense heat. Hearing Nate's voice, the both jumped on their feet and took a step back from each other.

"Mine and her secret. You can keep out. Best friends are allowed to share secrets", Max smiled at Selena as he headed towards Nate to grab the medicines off his hand.

"Best friends. I see, Fine! Leave me out. But I need you to leave us alone now. My baby here needs to take her medicines, otherwise she won't be able to make it to her own wedding".

Max got the hint and handed the bag back to Nate. He walked towards the door, quickly turning around to get one glance at Selena and she smiled back at him. The smile that killed him from the inside. The feelings forming inside him, he knew weren't right. He needed to keep his distance from Selena, she was the love of his brother's life and he had just wrecked that for him.

However, to keep his distance was something he wasn't sure how he would do that. Selena was his golden weapon. He needed to keep her around him, to protect her and guide her to success. She was the key to his business handover. He told himself '3 months' that's all he needs. Once the wedding was done, he would move back to Switzerland and let Nate and Selena live a happy married life.
