It has been about 24 hours since I watched me-maw and pop-pop die at the hands of my daddy. Then daddy walked out of my life until who knows when. He did it to save my life; it doesn't make it any easier to remember. I want my daddy. Only, in the last two hours, did I find my dad's best friend Tara, she is just as beautiful as daddy describes. So strong a woman, she is out with the village hunting, she has no children other than me, so she always goes out hunting with the other men. Women usually raise the children as the men hunt.

Different families are chosen every month to go into the city to salvage supplies that have dropped over the edge, which was supposed to be my family. Tara is letting me be on my own, mostly, as long as I stay quiet.

I'm sure that by now the village knows that I have no daddy. I refuse to believe that my daddy left me forever. He will come back to me!

I love wandering around and seeing the animals from afar. Especially the largest thing around, squirrels: about as big as one of those ancient small houses, they have become omnivorous and just one will feed our village for a few weeks, but usually we only get the leftovers of different animals, that were apparently mutated in many years to be large, but they became weaker to disease and physically unable to fight off predators, or each other.

I know that in twenty days, daddy will be sending me a message by transferring thoughts to one of the babies that come from the sky. The stork drops them into a pile and anyone who wants a baby has to catch one. We leave the rest there and we hunt all the animals that come by, scavenging the babies for a snack. That feeds the whole village and several other surrounding villages for around two months, we all work together and share stories of news and learn from each other's experiences.

It is not horrible, after all, I have a place to live and I know nothing else, I am kept safe by those around me and I have people, who love me in my life and I love them dearly.

It's a great time, but this time I need to check all the babies, so I need to be there first. I think Tara will take good care of me, daddy and she always act weird around each other, like they want to be around each other, like become married. I call her mommy; she smiles almost every time.

I hear some thoughts in the distance, its Tara "Marie honey where are you?" and I tell her where I am. She takes me back to the area that she lives, the basement of an ancient house.

Her daddy comes in with us and hands me something. He is chief because he can verbally talk, unlike most of us here who are mute (my daddy is the other one in our village that is not mute) and he says to me "Tara's mom sacrificed herself to get this for you as a gift, keep this honey, we remembered the one your daddy got you last year so ago and we thought it would help you with what you have been through. It will also help you blend into the city surroundings and it will also keep you warm at night after the sun goes down and it goes under freezing. We will have squirrel in the morning for breakfast, they are cooking it in an ancient giant oven."

I'm very tired already falling asleep and I cuddle up to the soft tuft, that's larger than me, on the other side of me is Tara, she takes my thumb out of my mouth and I can't do anything but hold the fuzzy tighter and tell her "I miss daddy."

She just looks at me softly with a tear rolling down her cheek, "me too honey, me too".
