I ran my fingers over the smooth granite countertop. Joji was on his phone, and I was listening to his steady breaths that interrupted the silence. My phone buzzed, notifying me that I had received a text. I felt a pit in my stomach. I already knew who it was.
There were two unread texts from the number this time, one of them I had chosen to ignore earlier on. The first one read, "I know his number too, and if you're going to cooperate I won't hurt him." The second one: "I know you're ignoring me. It isn't making things better."
"George." I tried to mutter, but instead it came out as a soft breath. He slightly winced at me calling him that, but instantly looked up from his phone, unlocking his fingers from each other and setting it down. "Hm?" He hummed. "Look." I handed him the phone.
I felt somewhat guilty for burdening him with my problems, but he was my only comfort in this situation. He read over the messages and gave it back. His face looked concerned. "I would tell you to tell the police, but they haven't physically harmed us in any way."
I nodded silently. I didn't care about my own wellbeing as much as I cared about Joji's. "Just don't text them back anymore." He muttered, gazing at me, his eyes looking more than worried. "I don't want them to hurt you." I started typing. "______, I can handle them if they try to hurt me. I can't be with you 24/7."
It was too late. I had already sent a text saying, "Alright, what do you want?" And the 'typing' symbol had shown up on my screen. Joji took notice of this and rubbed his face with his hands. I stared at my screen waiting for a response that I didn't receive until the next day.
I decided to set my phone down after a few minutes of waiting. Joji still had his face buried in his hands. When he looked up, his eyes were red as if he was rubbing them furiously. "I'm really tired. Can I spend the night?" He asked, his voice slightly raspy.
This was it. The only highlight of my day. My insides lit up but then simmered down immediately when I remembered the situation I was in. "S-sure." I stuttered. A tiny smile tugged at his lips. "Do you have a couch or anything?" He asked. "Unless your bed's fine-" I cut him off with a chuckle. "My bed's fine." I said, trying not to sound enthusiastic at all. "But don't get any ideas." I joked, winking, causing him to blush.
He shrugged it off, bounding to the bedroom with me behind him. Once there, he slid his shirt off, followed by his pants. He rolled into bed and I crawled in after him, sighing contently. He wrapped him arm around me, causing my face to redden. His breaths became steady as he drifted off to sleep, followed by me also dozing off.
