A tail?! How can I possibly have a tail? I must be dreaming.
I felt like I was hyperventilating. But wait, how am I breathing right now? I don't know what to do now. How do I get out of here? How far away is the surface? Is this even real?
I took a deep breath. Well, whether it's a dream or not, it wouldn't hurt to try to swim up. Maybe I'll wake up from this bizarre dream after I get there. I tested the tail, making a movement like I would to kick. The result was me being pushed up a few feet in the air (water?). Feeling inspired, I kicked harder and shot up abruptly. I was slightly jarred for a moment, but I didn't waste time kicking again and again. I was actually swimming! With a mermaid tail!
The light go brighter and brighter above me, and I could see the sun through the waves. I was almost there!
I popped my head out of the water and gasped for air, even though I didn't really need it. I looked up. It was daytime and there was a clear blue sky above me. I had to squint my eyes a little as they adjusted to the light. The water was calm all around me, and the weather was pleasant. It was a perfect day. The question was, what happened?
Turning my head, I spotted a shore about a hundred yards away from me. How had I gotten all the way out here? I started to swim towards the beach, but stopped suddenly as an epiphany hit me. How will I walk once I reach the shore? The water will be shallower than Amy, and believe me, that's shallow. I wish I had legs again!
I impatiently kicked my tail. Wait, no, I have legs again! Legs! I screamed out in joy, feeling relieved, and free-styled my way all the way back to the shore.
As I confidently walked out of the water, I realized yet another thing--I wasn't wearing any bottoms. Period.
Oh no, what am I going to do? I quickly covered myself as best I could and scanned the beach to make sure no one saw me. Thankfully, it was too early or something for people to be out. I couldn't believe my luck!
I spotted a couple that was passed out on the beach, clothes strewn about them everywhere. They were completely naked, and suddenly I didn't feel quite as self-concious. Looks like someone got a little action last night. I smiled slyly, shaking my head. Naughty teenagers.
I went to see what articles of clothing could be worn temporarily. I realized that the couple were both boys, so there was nothing but swim trunks to wear. I sighed, picking up the cuter-looking ones. Oh well, it was better than being waist-down naked. I just hoped no one saw me, and I hoped that the swim trunks weren't drenched in anything icky, if you know what I mean. I pulled them on and wrinkled my nose. Ew. I was so taking a shower when I got home.
I started walking down the beach and realized suddenly that this was Eddie's beach house property! Oh right, the party! Eddie and I had a fight. The thought made me tear up. I loved Eddie and never enjoyed fighting with him. But I can't go talk to him now, I look like a mess! I'd have to call him later once I got home and comfortable again.
I tried to sneak past his house, but it was hard when there was nothing to hide behind. How else was I going to get to the street? I slowly walked past Eddie's window, praying that he wouldn't look out. As I took tentative steps, getting closer and closer to the street, I heard some rustling, and looked up to see Eddie's face hovering above my head. Oh shit!
"Hannah?" he asked, sounding somewhat confused and half-asleep. "What are you doing here?"
I knew I couldn't jusgt leave now. He'd already seen me! But I didn't know what to say, or whether or not we were still fighting. I stared up at him blankly.
"Don't move, I'm coming down!" Eddie yelled, disappearing. I sighed. I hoped we weren't gonna have another argument, and I honestly didn't want to talk just then.
Eddie came jogging from around the house and stopped in front of me. We stood there awkwardly. "Hey."
"Hey."
"Look Hannah, I know why you're here." He paused and took a deep breath. "You're here because you think I should apologize, and . . . I will. I'm sorry, Hannah. I acted like a total dick last night. I mean, I should've known you and that nerd kid weren't up to anything. I should've trusted you, Hannah, and I'm sorry."
My heart swelled. I couldn't believe Eddie was being so sweet and sincere. I reached out to grab his hand when his gaze turned to my pants and he quickly recoiled, his face turning red.
"Who's fucking pants are those?!"
What?
Before I could say anything, Eddie lost it. "Are those that nerd kid's boxers? I knew you were up to no good! How could you do this to me, Hannah? You slut!"
I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. What could I say to show him I was innocent, but not make me sound crazy. Nevertheless, anger got the best of me.
"Fuck you! Why don't you trust me?!"
"Maybe because the reason we got together was because you're a homewrecker AND A CHEATING WHORE!"
I gasped, feeling my anger slightly replaced with heartache as the tears began to rise to my eyes. "I loved you Eddie, but fuck that! We're done!"
I pushed past him and ran towards the street. "For real, this time!" I yelled with a flip of the finger. I ran down the street to get anywhere but there, the place I lost my heart.
