"You know if you're really bad, they'll never want to see you again." Jake told me as I threw some last minute things into my bag. Trevor was supposed to be in here soon and I wanted to be able to jump in the car and leave as soon as he gets here.
"Shut up," I told him. "You have no idea how much I hate you right now."
He pretended to be offended. "It's not my fault I don't have to go there anymore. You'll be 18 in a couple of months and then you never have to see their ugly faces again either."
"But I'm not 18 yet, and I do have to. And you chose not to go see them again so technically it is your fault."
"I doubt they want to see me though. I look too much like mom for them show any amount of love toward me."
I smiled a little. "Looking like mom isn't a bad thing. Sometimes I wish I looked more like her...or at least had her height."
"You don't need to be taller. I can keep things away from you easier this way." He grabbed the shirt out of my hand and held it over my head to prove his point.
I jumped as high as I could, which wasn't that high at all, and tried to get it. "Jake! I'm trying to hurry here!"
He laughed harder and held it higher. My mom walked in and smacked him on the head. "What are you doing?"
"I'm making her work for something. She always gets things handed to her."
"Jake," mom said. "Hand it to her."
He sighed and threw the shirt at me. "You ruin all the fun."
I rolled my eyes as he sat down on my bed and pouted. He's such a baby. I walked over to the window to see if Trevor was here yet. Of course he wasn't. He's been avoiding me as much as possible this week. He would come around when Kenny and Kelly were around and be all friendly, but as soon as they were gone, so was he. I guess what happened at his house the other day was all fake too.
"Is Trevor still going?" Mom asked.
I shrugged. "As far as I know. He hasn't really said anything about it."
"I don't know if I like that guy that much," Jake said. "He seems...sketchy."
"Every boy I bring home seems sketchy to you." I mumbled.
"Maybe because they are."
I heard a car door outside and looked out the window. Kenny was walking up to the door. Not the guy I was looking for, but I'll take it. I ran downstairs and opened the door before he could knock.
"Uh hey." He smiled.
I threw my arms around him. "I don't want to go!"
He chuckled and hugged me back. "I know you don't but this will probably be the last time you have to go there. Just do what makes them happy and then you're free."
"They're never happy." I growled into his chest. These are the moments when I wish for x-ray vision.
"Maybe they have changed."
I pulled back and looked at him. "They haven't changed in 20 years, I doubt they ever will."
"You never know." He sang.
"Whatever. Come help me finish packing." I dragged him up the stairs and into my room. Jake had gone off to what ever he does and mom was still there folding my clothes in the bag neatly.
"You would have more room in here if you would organize it a little." She told me.
"It will be disorganized in two hours anyway. Why bother?"
