John's father had finally

came back. John was happy the war was over.

But he wasn't happy about his mother and father arguing in front of him. He didn't understand why they were fighting. He missed his dad though, and he did prefer his dad. Not that he would ever say that in front of Mummy though. But the topic had come up...

"Do you want to live with your mum or with me?!" Alf asked. They stared at him.

John looked down and quivered. He didn't like to make the decision, especially out loud in front of both of his parents, where he knew one of them was going to get their feelings hurt. But they still waited... "I want to live with daddy.." he told them.

Julia put her hand to her forehead. "Are you sure?!" She asked him.

John didn't want this. He wanted to live with both of them. Why did he have to make this decision? It's not fair! He thought to himself. He was only five, he shouldn't have to make this decision. They still stared.

John's thoughts raced. Will I never see mummy again? Will daddy take me away? Where were we going before Mummy and Mimi found us? As his thoughts played hopscotch his parents grew impatient.

"Well?!"

John forced himself to speak, "Daddy.."

Julia proceeded to stomp out the door. John got up and chased after her.

"Mummy!" He sobbed. Julia kept walking, Mimi had been waiting outside the house because Daddy had told her it was not her business. But now Mimi was still back at the house asking Alfred questions about what had happened. John caught up to his mother and hugged her waist, for it was as high as he could reach. "Mummy wait!" He cried.

Julia stopped and sobbed. She hugged John. John was fearful that she didn't love him anymore, but the hug told him otherwise. Mimi finally caught up to them and picked up John. Mimi rubbed John's back and
whisper-yelled to Julia, "How could you let a five year old make this kind of decision?!"

It all ended with John living with Mimi, which he didn't mind. He loved Mimi, and Mummy would come over from time to time, nearly everyday for a little while. And John was happy. But John never saw his father.

One time he had to ask, "Mimi, why don't I call you Mummy?"

Mimi smiled and looked down at him, "Well you very well can't have two mummies now can you?"

John smiled, he accepted that.

Though I know I'll never lose affection, for people and things, that went before.
I know I'll often stop and think about them.
In my life, I love you more.
