"you've done it!" the doctor shouts.
whoa. i just delivered a baby.
minutes later, a nurse hands the baby to me. it's a girl.
i cradle her in my arms, tobias at my side.
"so," he says softly," what are you going to name her?"
smile spreading across my face, i glance up at him.
"you know what, i'm just so happy we have a child. you can name her."
"wow! okay! but, are there any specific rules?"
"just two. one, don't name her barbara, i don't like that name. and two, name her something meaningful."
"you got it," he grins.
•••
10 minutes later
the door creaks open, and i see tobias enter the room with a paper in hand.
"hey. is that the certificate? what'd you name her? oo can i guess? what's the first letter?"
"D."
"D. isss ittt Daniella?"
"nope," he grins.
"Daisy? Diana? Destiny? Daphne?"
"nope! are you ready?!"
"oh yes, i'm ready."
"i gave her the most meaningful name i could think of," he replies, handing me the piece of paper.
i turn it around, it reads:
this certifies that Dauntless Cake was born to Tobias Eaton and Beatrice Prior.
Dauntless Cake??
slowly, i look up at tobias, who is grinning so wide i can see his teeth.
"you named our child Dauntless Cake?"
"isn't it beautiful?!" he squeaks.
"promise you won't be tempted to eat our child?" i sigh.
he just laughs, and leaves for the bathroom.
i look at the baby in my arms, who is sleeping. i've never felt so sorry for anybody.
