The next day was a bit better. I really just want to forget about everything. I went with Leigh to work. She's a bartender at the hotel I sing at. We kept everything light, and tried to avoid the conversation of what Jade was doing in my house until I was ready to tell her. That's the great thing about Leigh Anne, she lets you take your time and lets you come to her.
"Perrie! Finally, you're here!" I hear my manager, Cher, call from behind. She looked at me with such relief. She put her petite hands on my shoulders, and led me into what she now loves to call her office. "Sit, sit. We have a lot to discuss." She adjust her glasses, and straightened up her already perfectly organized desk before looking up at me. Cher was so tiny that she looked like she was sixteen or something.
"So, guess what?" asked Cher. "I got you a summer gig on a cruise!" She clapped her hands all happy. "Uhm, Cher, not to burst your bubble or anything but I can't go on a cruise. I'm pregnant."
"Yeah, six months pregnant. I'm sure that little sucker will be out before then." She countered.
"That's even worst!" I yell. "I was actually going to let you know that I need a break from my career to raise my child." Cher's eyes literally bugged out. Her jaw dropped, and her hands clenched. I had a feeling she was going to be mad, but what did she expect? I need some sort of maternity leave. The hotel's already agreed to it.
"You can't do this to me, Perrie! I've worked hard to get you that gig. It can pay for your burnt up kitchen! It can pay for your kid's future!" She handed me a stack of papers with a pen on top.
"I care about you, Per. I really do. That's why I'm working this hard. Go read this over, and think about it. Okay?" I sighed, giving in. I got up, not even looking twice at Cher as I headed out the door.
"Everything okay?" Leigh Anne asked as she wiped down the counter. I shook my head. "If I wasn't pregnant, I'd ask for some whiskey."
"That bad, huh?" Leigh Anne took a look at the papers Cher had given me. Cher used to be so understanding. We met at a Bruno Mars concert. She heard me singing in the bathroom, and immediately asked me to let her represent me. At the time, I was so intrigued at the idea that I said yes. Little did I know she'd be booking me a bunch of small gigs. The hotel one was probably the best out of all the gigs she's thrown my way. Gosh, what happened?
"That's a pretty good deal, Perrie. What's the problem?" Leigh Anne asked after she was through skimming the pages.
"I want a break! I want to stay with my kid, and Zayn."
"It will be in the summer, so he could tag along."
I sighed. "I'll need to talk with him about this. He always knows what to do."
...
"Hey, I'm here for my appointment." I told the receptionist.
"Perrie?" the receptionist asked. I nodded. "That's me. My husband won't be with me today, so my friend Leigh Anne will be here. Can you send her in when she gets here?" The receptionist wrote down Leigh's name on a post it note before sending me on my way.
