"What do you mean he's gone?" Esther screamed at the brunette's words when she heard them through Kevin, who could only shrug, not knowing much.
"Kevin, don't just stand there twiddling your thumbs!" Scott retorted angrily and irritably, held back from leaving himself by Mitch sobbing uncontrollably into his shoulder.
Even though Mitch had his crush's heart, he was still his best friend and he always took care of him like the younger brother he never had. He couldn't leave him at a moment like that even though it was imperative that they find Avi soon.
"I'm not twiddling my thumbs, Scott!" Kevin snapped, unable to control himself anymore as he turned to leave the room.
He had tried to remain calm and cheerful but all of the conflicting tension and confusion brought out his discomfort. He couldn't keep taking all the negativity even though they were all people he was grateful for for he seemed to repel negativity. Nevertheless, he would just head out for some fresh air and then return and attempt to help them out in the situation they'd landed themselves in.
At the sound of the genuinely hurt tone in Kevin's voice, Scott yelled after him to stop. Cheerful Kevin who usually kept them all from going crazy had taken all their jokes as just that but he seemed so hurt that Scott couldn't bear to let it pass without an apology. Muttering an apology to Mitch, he released himself from the sobbing boy's hold and ran after Kevin.
"The two of you can't keep sending people out of the room again and again, man," Esther sighed as she awkwardly patted Mitch's back as he sat in front of a mirror, wiping his face as he profusely apologized to Esther for being the cause behind her brother's disappearance.
"Mitch, knowing Avi, he's probably just somewhere away from us to cool down and set his head right before confronting you. He's been like that for quite some time, you know. Something you should know if you're going to date him," Esther attempted to calm him by rubbing soothing circles on his temples.
"You would even consider letting him date me after all that I've done to hurt him?" Mitch exclaimed incredulously.
"Look, Mitchie, first off, he's a grown-up and I can't force him to listen to me. Secondly, if he were to listen to me, I'd encourage him to give you a shot. I know you and I know him; you two are perfect for each other. Lastly, we all mess up every now and then, but that doesn't mean we're bad. You genuinely messed up, and I have faith in you to correct it in your own way."
Mitch's face stretched in a weak grin. It sure was nice to know what Esther thought and if she had that much faith in him, he couldn't let her down. They would find Avi, and he would set it all right.
But where was he?
"So does that mean I can ask you out?" Avi's low voice exclaimed.
Avi entered the room as the two turned to look at him with wide eyes. A smile found its way onto Avi's face as he took in the grin on his sister's face. He wanted to do it the right way, to give Mitch everything he deserved. He would be what he needed and he would live the rest of his life being his best for the love of his love.
Mitch blushed but told the bewildered man that he would rather have Avi be whatever he wanted to, and who he was. He wouldn't have to change anything for him. Avi's face turned a rather adorable baby pink as he blushed when he realized he'd spoken his thoughts out loud.
"Well, that's one way to propose, Avi!" Esther squealed from her seat, making her brother roll his eyes and his now-boyfriend laugh.
"So does that mean we're together? Like boyfriends?" Mitch queried.
"Only if you want to," Avi replied with a kind and loving smile.
"I do, do you?" the usually confident brunette timidly asked, worried that the answer would be negative.
"Hmm, let me think. Nah, I don't, not after I made a heartfelt speech, bye!" he exclaimed and turned as if he was exiting the room.
Esther smacked him with a magazine lying nearby and berated him, reminding him that it was no time to joke around.
"Get used to a whole load of random 'funny' jokes at inappropriate times," she told Mitch, who sighed in relief that it hadn't been real.
He opened his mouth to say something when ruffled up Kevin and Scott entered with excited Kirstin on their heels as she clapped loudly and cheered. Mitch thought she couldn't be happier when she brightened up at the sight of their linked hands.
She pretended to wipe away her tears as she sang, "Young love, first love, filled with true devotion. Young love, our love, we share with deep emotion!"
She pointedly looked at Mitch and Avi, and at Scott and Kevin.
