Chapter 34:

((Carter's point of View))

Recovery.

It's easier said then done.

Drugs.

They were an easy quick fix. They had bad aftermaths, but hey they helped me get along day by day. Just like day by day I watch Fay slowly grow stronger.

She hasn't become concious yet, but she was alive. Truthfully, that's all that mattered.

Sometimes, as I watched her, I would lose it. Then I remembered that she wouldn't this for me. I had to obey her wishes. That was easier said then done. Then again most things are in this life.

I kissed her cheek. "I'll come back in the morning."

The visiting hours were over and I needed to go home to take a shower. I did this every night. When I was done showing and eating, I got a ride back to the hospital and stayed all night. It was dedication. She had done the same for me. I needed to return the favor.

"Hello, Carter." Nurse Chapman said as I returned to the hospital.

My hair was still slightly wet from my shower not even an hour ago. "Hi. How's she doing?"

"She's still not awake." she says, knowing that's what I'm really meaning.

"Any guesses on when she'll be awake?" I ask.

She shakes her head. "It's still any day now."

I sigh. "Thanks."

Without another word I head to the break room where a cot was set up for me to sleep on. I stayed there until eight the next morning. Eight was when i was allowed to see her again. I would stay in her room until three which was when the first session visiting hours were over. Then an hour and a half later I return to stay with her until ten that night. There was hardly a moment I was out of her room during visiting hours. I just didn't want to leave her side.

She was important to me. More important then most of these people could begin to understand.

All of a sudden Nurse Chapman comes bursting into the room.

"Is something wrong?" I ask quickly, thinking the worst automatically. "What's happened?"

"She's awake." she says.

"Awake as in?" I had to make sure my information was right. I had to make sure this was really happening.

"Awake as in fully awake. Aware of everything that's going on. Also scared shitless." the nurses says. "The doctors need you pronto."

I quickly get up and run to her room.

Sure enough there she was. She was laying down. Her eyes had bags, as if she hadn't slept in days despite the fact that she has been unconcious for too long.

Despite all these factors she was awake. That's what was important.
