::The next day later at night::

I lay in my bed watching the remains of the brilliant colors from the sunset fade into the familiar blue-black of night. Every so often I would simply lay on my bed and watch the rays of Sun fade into the distance. It's calming, yet terrifying at some point. Even so, it clears my mind and allows me to think. I've been needing more time like this lately, which bothers me.
Kuro hadn't come to school today, which left me even more time to think about yesterday. How can someone like that be insufferable yet, considerate in his own silent way. My eyes traveled to the rolled up drawing that lay on my old oakwood desk. There aren't enough words to describe the emotion that was compiled into the picture. It did send a message though, even without the written words beside his signature.
     Apologetic sincerity.
From the day I met him, he's sent me mixed signals, he's cold, yet warm; reserved, yet curious; cruel, yet considerate. I don't know what to think of Kuro Ravensdale. Even his sexual orientation is a bizarre entity that I can't figure out. One minute he's into guys, the next, he's completely straight.  At this rate, my necks going to get whiplash.
I sat up and got off my bed to walk out of my room. Suddenly, I just wanted what any other teenage boy would want. Got a hint to what it is? It's food, get your mind out of the gutter! Although, I could probably use some of that too....
    .....Just a bit.
As I descended down the the stairs, I heard the sound of someone fumbling around in the kitchen. The faint scent of dough wafted over to my nose and I knew it was grandmother baking bread. Upon entering the kitchen I grabbed a blueberry out of the tin bowl and popped it into my mouth. The freshest ones come from the forest, even though I'm not allowed to go there. Looking to my grandmother, I took a moment to observe her from behind for a moment.
Her long once black hair had greyed with age and was woven into a braid that trailed down her back. She was about 5'3 with a medium build. Small in stature, but strong just the same. Her face was heart shaped and had laugh lines in all the right places, but also worry lines. They told a story of how she cared for the tribe and our family with all her heart and worried for all our wellbeing. Everyone loved and respected her for it.
She turned to start kneeding the dough and looked up at me. "Sun child, what is it that has you standing there so quietly for once?" her lips quirked into a teasing smile and I pouted. "I can be quiet! I just, choose not to be most of the time. What are you making?" I said as I jumped up to perch my behind on the table surface.  She nodded toward the ingredients she had gathered to the side. "Blueberry cinnamon bread. Your mothers been craving it."
I snorted and shook my head. We only ever ate the stuff every once in a while because my mom would get hooked on it as if it was heroine. The woman doesn't eat a lot, but give her some of this bread and she won't stop. Grandma passed me a lump of dough and half of the blueberries, which meant since I'm here then I might as well help. I dipped my hands into the bowl of flour and shook the excess off, then proceeded to start incorporating the flour into the dough. She nodded in approval and kept at her own lump of dough.
"So you aren't entirely useless after all. This is good news." Before I could stop myself, my face had already formed into a glare. So I preferred things to be done for me rather than to do it. Someone else could do a much better job than me, I'm not lazy it's just logic people!  After giving her a roll of my eyes I let it go and began putting small bundles of blueberries into the dough one by one. "The days are getting warmer grandma. Sun must be happier with this years events" My eyes were focused on the dough, but I saw her nodding in my  peripheral vision.
"Could be, or he's waiting on something to happen. Even Sun gets anxious at times." Her usual knowing tone sounded even more set. As if something like that was truer than her words. "Why would Sun be anxious? Everything happens for a reason, and it is all according to everyone's individual fate. Shouldn't he be relaxed?" I put the last of the blueberries in the dough and began gently kneeding it, so as not to burst the fruit prematurely. "It is not that simple child, he worries for more than we know. He see's dangers that we do not." her words lay in my mind as I contemplated the meaning.
"Did he worry, when such evil tried to kill me after I was born?" the question was one I had been thinking about for a while. If grandmother had never asked to spare my life, would I be here today? She looked at me and spoke, "He did, he warned us once that it would happen." With that, my hands momentarily paused in their activity. "You were warned? What do you mean by that?" I turned my head toward her and frowned. Instead of bring worried, she continued to calmly prepare her bread. "Several years before you and your mother were born, an old man of the tribe was sent a vision of Sun. He was told that when a child is born of the summer solstice in midst of the rising heat, a dark entity will try and wipe that child from existence."
"Why me? What could I have possibly done to anger something like that so much that it'd want to kill me as soon as I was born?" I couldn't understand, there was just so many things that weren't explained. She sat quiet as we finished up our dough, and hummed for a moment. "Perhaps something you've done in a past life." with that, she carefully placed her rolled dough into a bread pan. I followed suit as I did the same with mine and placed it in the preheated oven along with hers. "A past life?" it was a statement, but the way it came out sounded more as a question. "That doesn't explain why I was saved."
"Yes, you are blessed by Sun, meaning that he needs you. For whatever reason that is, and the life you lived before this one, holds importance in the outcom-" she paused, and shook her head. Drying my hands after washing them, I looked to her as she attempted to forget the last of her sentence. "Nana, what were you going to say?" curiosity was getting the better of me, but I didn't care. She began to walk out of the kitchen and smiled softly. "Ashton, you are impatient Sun child."
I watched as her small form disappeared further into the house, probably to the basement to tend to her list of things to do. She completely blew me off. That was entirely not like her, but something told me there was more to the story then what she was letting on. I rubbed my eyes and looked at the stove clock. It was around nine, so of course I was tired. Running a hand through my hair, I walked to the stairs and began my climb to the second floor.
Before I even got to my door, i'd already began stripping off my clothes for the day. Even though the dream always tired me out even more, I craved what little rest I got. Throwing the clothes into the hamper by my desk, I crawled into my bed wearing only my boxers. The warmth of the heavy duvet and dozen of fluffed pillows surrounded me and I relaxed into my thoughts once more. A past life, no one could ever know what that is. We knew of them, but they could never be remembered. For all anyone knew, they could've been a snail in a past life.
Even so, the feeling that she knew something wouldn't disperse. The comment about me not being patient has me unsettled, and some things telling me that life isn't going to go back to normal any time soon.
I curled up under the covers and pillows as I began to fall into the soft wave of sleep. As consciousness began to further elude me, I could only hope that everything would soon be back to normal. Just as it was before.
